Orange County cities favor domestic partner registry

Leaders in Orange County's cities said Friday they are largely comfortable with extending Orlando's domestic partner protections countywide.

Orlando last year approved the registry as a way for same sex and unmarried couples to officially designate a surrogate to handle certain emergency notification, end-of life and other protections that married couples possess.

"Don't misunderstand, I'm not for same-sex marriage, but this is a great thing, and it's needed," said Maitland Mayor Howard Schieferdecker.

Both Bruhn and Shieferdecker pointed out it would be positive tool for elderly residents and neighbors, and not just for same-sex couples.
