An Ann Coulter book signing event went terribly wrong after undocumented immigrants created chaos. Over 100 people carrying signs disrupted Coulter as she attempted to promote her new book, ¡Adios, America!: The Lefts Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third World Hellhole, which focuses on immigration.
On Wednesday, the conservative and controversial commentator, who is currently promoting her new book, Adios, America: The Lefts Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third-World Hellhole, was at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Costa Mesa for a signing event.
In the book, Coulter, like Donald Trump explains that undocumented immigrants are the ones destroying America.
She touches the third rail in American politics, attacking the immigration issue head-on and flying in the face of La Raza, the Democrats, a media determined to cover up immigrants crimes, churches that get paid by the government for their charity, and greedy Republican businessmen and campaign consultantsall of whom are profiting handsomely from mass immigration thats tearing the country apart. Applying her trademark biting humor to the disaster that is U.S. immigration policy, Coulter proves that immigration is the most important issue facing America today.
More than 100 activists, some with banners and one with the Mexican flag hijacked Coulters book signing. One protester said that Coulter is making all immigrants look like criminals and added that the writer needs to be reminded that we are all immigrants because this land originally belonged to Native Americans, not Europeans, not Latin Americans. Sharon Tipton said:
Theres been a lot of anti-Latino, racist remarks coming from (Coulter). She shows some major problems in our society.

(34,133 posts)How does the author of this article know the immigration status of the people protesting? Did someone go around at the protest and check the documents of the people there?
From the article:
Theres been a lot of anti-Latino, racist remarks coming from (Coulter). She shows some major problems in our society.
I didn't know Tipton was a Latino surname!
This is a pretty complementary article about Coulter and the trash she's pushing.

(75,480 posts)right wing haven. So it's pretty cool she's been protested in a place she probably felt comfortable in. I notice there was no book signing in Santa Monica which is very liberal.

(65,269 posts)therefore, a Latino. My father's parents came here from Sicily, but Dad was born in the US. He was, therefore, an American, despite having Sicilian parents who became US citizens through naturalization.
Although he Americanized his nme when he joined the Airforce, his birth name was Salvatore Giovanni.if someone remarked that it didn't sound like an American name, I would point out that many Americans have names that are not whitebread American, just as many Latinos have non-Hispanic European--or even Asian--names.

Ann Coulter Wants to Know Why She Doesnt Make You Mad Anymore
Annie Lowrey
Nobody is paying attention to Ann Coulter, and she does not like it.
Theyre ignoring me now! Coulter wails, sitting in a conference room at the National Press Club in Washington as a large crowd filters in to hear her promote her new book, ¡Adios, America!.
I havent been on CNN yet, because I was made up, my hair was done, I was miced up, I was walking to the set, where Don Lemon was anchoring, she said. He was doing a full hour on the Doogans or whatever their name is, she said, referring to the Duggars. Given the interest in one Duggar son's confession of molestation, the network ended up bumping her segment. The next night, Were going to do all Doogans again. And then the next week, its the cop who yelled at a girl in a bikini! And then its Bruce Jenner!
This is the lament of a woman who became a national political celebrity by stoking outrage who rose up alongside the cable-television networks and conservative talk-radio, needling liberals and flattering conservatives with a potent mix of hilarity, bombast, and the occasional dash of racism. This is the lament of a woman who has written an outrageous book, one immaculately designed to piss off half of America, or more. This is the lament of a woman living in a time of outrage, outrage that spreads viruslike on Twitter, television, and Facebook. This is the lament of a woman who has found herself unable to capitalize on that outrage.

(75,480 posts)As Mediaite shared, the Ann Coulter book signing that raised a ruckus was held at a Barnes & Noble for her book Adios, America: The Lefts Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third-World Hellhole. Reports indicate that a group of protesters chanted throughout the signing and had banners as well. Gabriel San Roman, a reporter for the OC Weekly, says that when it became clear during the signing that he wasnt a fan of Coulters, he was shooed out of the way by security.
The OC Register details that about 100 people gathered at the bookstore for the signing on Wednesday night, and that protesters and Coulter fans clashed heavily. The protesters apparently grew to be about 50 people strong, and about 20 security guards attempted to keep the peace both inside and in front of the store. A number of protesters were asked by security to leave, and reports indicate that at one point the police were called.
During the heat of the protests, private visits with Coulter were halted and the media was reportedly asked to leave the store. There were some arguments between the Coulter fans and protesters, and some heckling, but it doesnt seem that things escalated to the point of there being any violence, injuries, or arrests.

(23,664 posts)Now she can use the incident to portray herself as the victim.
The ideal outcome would have been to goad her into making a complete ass of herself, a total loss of dignity, like maybe physically assaulting a protester, but she apparently didn't take the bait, unfortunately.
I even wonder if she didn't stage the whole thing. Notice she wasn't appearing at a Barnes & Noble in East LA, but instead at one in a Anglo enclave on the Orange County coast.
Cleita
(75,480 posts)are pretty Anglo, but very liberal. She would have been jeered there too. She picked a right wing, white place that was in her comfort zone, but anywhere in LA is no place to pick on Hispanics and get away with it. I think she knows that now.

(81,180 posts)I don't know the political temperature in all those enclaves down there. But Orange County is pretty CONservative. Got Newport Beach and Fascist Island (Fashion Island) where there are lots of really ritzy stores and tall slick office buildings that look like they're full of lawyers and banksters. The rare times I'm on the freeway passing through there, I'm always amazed at how built-up it is. SHEESH. Wasn't like that in the 70s.

(19,473 posts)It may well be that lots of copies have been bought the rightwing organizations in order to push it to bestseller status. Doesn't matter to her. She still gets the money.
I'll cheer when such books by big rightwing names are flops from the day of publication. If that ever happens.
Cleita
(75,480 posts)They count the books sold by the publishers to the retail book outlets. The rightwing organizations buy directly from them I believe or the tally would be different. They should count what is sold from the outlets instead. It would show a different story. When I worked in a bookstore, we often sent back books that didn't sell, but there was no reverse count either. So those returned books were still counted as sales to the NYT.
DavidDvorkin
(19,473 posts)Amazon ranks show "sales velocity" -- a combination of number of sales and the time span during which the sales were made. So if a lot of her fans bought her book right away, that would drive up the Amazon sales rank. If that's the case, the sales rank will then decline quickly.

These protestors were real and very offended by her very racist book. Latinos are more vulnerable to these types of racist attacks, even more so than blacks because of the fact they might be undocumented and can't come out of the shadows yet.

We never needed security guards, even for some of the more controversial authors. I think the guards are hers not the bookstore's or maybe provided by one of the conservative think tanks or even the KKK for all we know. B&N is too cheap to pay for that.

I've only been to one book signing in my life and that was actually for a soap star (the guy who plays Max Scorpio on General Hospital. He was a really nice friendly guy. I went since I had purchased the 30th anniversary book in the early 90's).

(18,623 posts)There is no such thing as bad press for Coulter when she has a new book out. That's why she puts on a little black dress and goes on the air to spout something willfully ignorant. Ann Coulter does these signings- not to placate her fans- but as free publicity to get the word out that she's peddling another hate filled screed.
I'm not picking on you for posting this, but if the media could see fit to ignore her and her purposely outrageous statements she'd be marginalized as a footnote of American journalism. As it is, she thrives on this sort of attention to the point that she could just as well hire these protesters herself. As it is, these people are probably helping her for free.
Unlike others such as Donald Trump, she can't be boycotted. Her fans will buy her book regardless, and that's all she's selling. It's impossible anymore to tell when the difference between her pandering and sincerity.
