Although I daresay a German jingo or two ended up with bullet holes, for the most part they continue to cheer from the sidelines. Where it can be truly said they have the soldier's back -- as far back as possible.

Kipling has the distinction of being used by chickenhawks and cynics. "Tommy" is a fine evocation at how we use our soldiers when we aren't using them to blow up other people.

Of course, there are probably people who take Twain's Prayer literally. Reminds me of this song, in fact:
