The home server sends you data units, your machine does a bunch of processing on them in unused CPU cycles, then retransmits the data back to the home server. It allows a lot of brute forcing of biological data to be done without using supercomputers, but instead tens of thousands of home volunteers. SETI@Home was the pioneer in this sort of setup, processing data from the telescopes in the search for extraterrestrial life.
