Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has a lot on his plate at the moment chiefly, the threat of an indictment on first-degree felony charges in Collin County. Then, of course, theres the dust-up over his nonbinding opinion issued over the weekend that said county clerks can refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples if they feel doing so violates their religious liberties. To see how thats playing out, look no further than Granbury, where clerk Katie Lang can expect her federal lawsuit first thing Monday morning.
Now, it turns out, more than 150 Texas attorneys have sign a missive that says theyre this close to going to the State Bar of Texas with a complaint concerning his opinion. Those signatures were collected by Rockport attorney Stever Fischer, a former director of the State Bar of Texas, and Brian Bouffard, a Fort Worth military and criminal defense attorney. In their press release issued Friday morning, they say Paxton has violated several sections of the Texas Rules of Disciplinary Conduct by encouraging state employees in their non-compliance with the United States Supreme Court.
There is politics, there is law, they say in their release, and then theres the State Bar of Texas Disciplinary System, which can revoke an attorneys license to practice. Fischer told the the Texas Tribune he plans to file the complaint if Paxton doesnt reverse course. Says Fischer, I think he could very easily be disbarred.
But Austins Glen Maxey, who served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1991 to 2003, isnt waiting around.

(10,495 posts)Not all of us in Texas are down with the R's! There are millions of us that don't subscribe to the hateful and abusive policies and long running corruption of the Republicans in this state. We need to get rid of the gerrymandering first, and then we can beat those assholes!

(82,849 posts)I would remind folks that after failing to convict President Clinton after his impeachment, the zealots had Clinton kicked off the U.S. Supreme Court Bar for his terrible "crimes." Purely symbolic, of course, since Clinton is unlikely to argue any cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, but it shows just how petty conservatives can be, particularly when they don't get their way.
Attorney General Paxton needs to have a lot of these nagging little matters occupying his attention.
