The battle flag represented an army that waged the bloodiest war in American history to defend the right of humans to own humans. When the North too quickly gave up on its occupation of the South during the Reconstruction period, the white southern establishment immediately reasserted itself, using Jim Crow laws and segregation to ensure that freed slaves achieved nothing like true freedom. Denied access to voting rolls, blacks were blocked from serving on juries and in turn violence against them was sanctioned by their own governments.
