The Anniston City Council tonight approved a resolution to prohibit signs, flags and other displays on public property.
Though it wasn't mentioned in the resolution by name, council members said in their remarks that the resolution would keep the Confederate flag from being displayed in the median along Quintard Avenue and rights-of-way.
City Manager Brian Johnson said the resolution was intended to clear up uncertainty regarding the median. City officials are unsure whether the city owns the property, or whether the state does, since Quintard is also a state highway. The resolution would make sure that existing laws prohibiting displays, which include advertising signs along rights-of-way, would be enforced in the median.
City Councilman Seyram Selase said ..."I think it's very important for us to get beyond the heritage vs. hate type of conversation, and get towards what is divisive and what is not" ...
