Cecil the lion's killer revealed as American dentist

Cecil the lion – the most famous creature in one of Zimbabwe's national parks – was killed by an American hunter who has boasted about shooting a menagerie of animals with his bow and arrow, The Telegraph can reveal.

Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, is believed to have paid £35,000 to shoot and kill the much-loved lion with a bow and arrow. The animal was shot on July 1 in Hwange National Park. Two independent sources have confirmed the hunter's identity to the paper, which has also seen a copy of the relevant hunting permit.

Conservation groups in Zimbabwe reacted angrily to the news that the 13-year-old animal had been killed: partly because the lion was known to visitors and seemingly enjoyed human contact, and partly because of the way in which he was killed. He was lured out of the national park and shot.

"He never bothered anybody," said Johnny Rodrigues, the head of Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. "He was one of the most beautiful animals to look at."

This one's special ... Mostly because he's famous, he's a symbol, he's important for tourism.

Not because he's a male lion.

Killing a male lion happens all that infrequently without much of a reaction, so it's not just the maleness of the lion or the fact that it's a lion that was killed. The reaction is completely different this time, and you'd have to think that it's what's different that accounts for the difference in reactions.

It helps that it's an ugly American, that it's a white male American, and that he's not impoverished. But the outrage bandwagon had left the barn before that info was leaked.

Dentist is being crucified on YELP! HAH! This man is finished as a member of his community. I've never been a hunter but I used to do some target shooting & know people who are lifelong hunters. Basic rule, never hunt too late in the day, because if you only wound an animal, you are supposed to be able to track it down and finish the job before dark SO THE ANIMAL DOES NOT SUFFER MORE THAN NECESSARY. So I really expect that any ethical hunter would shun this dentist. Here's one sample "review".

This asshole went into a game sanctuary at night, tied a dead animal to his truck to lure the lion outside the sanctuary, shot it with a bow and arrow - and although this piece of slime brags he's a great shot, only wounded the animal and (it being DARK), could not track it and finish it off and was not able to locate if for FORTY HOURS, during which time the animal suffered greatly, then found it, shot it , cut off its head and skin, and then (with his law-breaking "guide&quot trucked the carcass back to the edge of the sanctuary. I hope whole countries take note and deny him entry.
