For those who are unfamiliar:

American Dentist Identified As Killer Of Famed Lion In Zimbabwe

Cecil the lion was shot with a bow and arrow, then stalked for 40 hours before he was finally killed with a rifle.

An American dentist with an affinity for killing rare wildlife using a bow and arrow has been identified as the man who shot and killed Zimbabwe's most famous lion earlier this month, local officials claim.

Dr. Walter Palmer, a dentist working in Bloomington, Minnesota, is said to have paid $55,000 to hunt the 13-year-old lion, named Cecil, according to a report from The Telegraph. The animal was allegedly lured with meat out of Hwange National Park -- a protected area that bans hunting -- into an adjacent hunting zone where he was shot with an arrow. The lion was then followed for 40 hours before he was ultimately killed with a rifle.

The Zimbabwe tourism department also sent out a tweet early Tuesday identifying Palmer as the man who killed Cecil, using the hashtag #illegalhunt.

Obviously the lion wasn't his first victim. His actions are particularly dispicable when you consider that he cut off the head and skinned the lion then left his body to rot on the plain.

posting an ill-considered, poorly worded tweet that begs to be misconstrued, right before getting on an airplane so you'll have no idea how the tweet was received.

Sure there might be some people who think even still, this cretin shouldn't lose his business over it (and I suspect that ultimately, he won't, because people have short memories). But a whole lot of people who don't want to see someone pounded over a bad tweet, will not be stepping up to defend this scumbag.

Someone tweeted something that she said later was meant as a joke. It was poorly done. But the bad thing is she got on a plane and didn't even know what was happening until she got off the plane, looked at her phone and found her reputation in tatters. If I recall correctly she lost her job over it. Many people felt that was a case of internet bullying going too far.

My point was that actually killing a magnificent, beloved animal, is a much different case than that other situation. This dentist will only find defenders among other killers, I suspect. The people who said "too much" for the reaction to the (perceived) ugly tweet, will probably not be saying that for this guy. JMHO, of course.

I don't know what getting on a plane and not knowing about it has to do with it. Many people may feel it's a case of internet bullying going too far, but I can't say because you won't say what she said.

People aren't immune from consequences of their actions and sometimes those consequences involve the internet. Some are more likely to garner sympathy, which is why I don't understand how the specifics aren't the point.

The bastard poacher:

"A spokesman for the hunter told the Guardian that Palmer was “obviously quite upset over everything.”

This isn't the first time Palmer has come under fire for his hunting techniques. In 2008, he was placed on probation for one year and fined $2,939 after lying to federal authorities twice about where he shot a black bear in Wisconsin.

Billy Cannon kept his license after going to the pen for counterfeiting by doing dental work at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Maybe Dr. Palmer can make a similar deal with the Zimbabwean government after he gets out of prison.

Let's extradite him promptly!
