Earlier this month, Nancy Pelosi came out in full support of the U.S. nuclear deal with Iran, as she and fellow House Democrats were in the midst of what she called the "educational phase" of reviewing the agreement.
Now, two weeks later, she says she's "confident" that the House would be able to uphold the president's veto of a potential Republican-backed bill to kill the deal.
"More and more of them have confirmed to me that they will be there to sustain the veto," Pelosi said at her weekly press conference, referring to members of the Democratic caucus. "They've done this not blindly but thoroughly," as they examined the agreement over recent weeks.
Obama administration cabinet members have been lobbying Congress in the days since the deal was announced, attending hearings on the Hill and privately discussing its provisions with representatives.
Pelosi: Dems will solidify Iran deal
House Democrats will provide the necessary support to finalize President Obama's nuclear deal with Iran, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) predicted Thursday.
Asked if the Democrats could sustain a promised veto of the Republicans' expected disapproval measure, Pelosi didn't hesitate.
"Yes," she replied.

Pelosi on Thursday hailed Obama for keeping the global negotiators at the table, characterizing the deal as "a diplomatic masterpiece." She said House Democrats are lining up behind the deal in numbers sufficient to uphold a veto of the expected Republican effort to sink the deal.

(23,946 posts)Like lawmakers are supposed to do according to the 60 day debate period as mandated by the law passed by the very same Congress to which the ignorant GOP monkey-whisperers belong, and not just run to Twitter the moment the agreement was announced to scream their ignorant and uninformed outrage to a fawning and sound bite hungry troll-loving media, and of course to appease their campaign fundraisers and contributors?
About time...wonder if the media banshees will pause in their coverage of food fights to take notice?

(1,150 posts)In the incredibly unlikely event of a veto and override, Europe, Russia, China and others will decide to proceed nonetheless, and American sanctions will slowly become irrelevant as the rest of the nations of the world call our bluff and ignore them.
The primary outcome would be a weakening of American diplomatic power, which would suck. If the rest of the world can't count on the United States to engage in responsible diplomacy and adopt reasonable agreements when its Executive branch has engaged in hard-core negotiations to bring them about, then we'll be sidelined in many such future processes. That's what the GOP and AIPAC-owned Democrats would serve up (and only that) if they tanked the deal. Additionally, the ridiculous influence tiny Israel has over our legislative branch will become a matter of subtle, but increasingly open, scorn.

Schumer and buddies have already discussed this with Pelosi and Obama and have permission to posture in order to protect their seats (so to speak).

(68,868 posts)having a 2/3 vote to repudiate it in the Senate would certainly have the effect of undermining its legitimacy in the view of some.
The more votes against it now, the easier it would be for a future president to walk away from it and launch a war.

Looks like she's working her way back!

(26,549 posts)Otherwise, people might bother looking into those benefits for displaced workers. And notice that they didn't actually help. In fact, the people who managed to actually receive those benefits make less than the ones who did not manage to jump through the bureaucratic hoops.

In other words, we fight each battle as it comes
There are going to always be some issues we agree with the Democratic leadership, and some issues we don't

The U.S. Senate rejected an effort on Tuesday to require any nuclear agreement with Iran to be considered an international treaty, which would have forced any deal to be ratified by two-thirds of the Senate's 100 members.
The Senate voted 57-39 to reject the measure, which Republican Senator Ron Johnson offered as an amendment to the Iran Nuclear Review Act, a bill requiring an Iran nuclear deal to be reviewed by Congress
