Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHello everyone. I'm ok.
I was given a cocktail of heartburn, reflux, antacid type pills and such and the pain subsided. Since the pain subsided, they determined everything was ok. I've had heartburn type episodes before but this felt different. Scared me quite a bit. But all vitals normal. I didn't mean to scare anyone but I got scared. I'm still going to do a follow up with my normal physician. I'm no spring chicken.

(110,913 posts)Some people with a horrible GERD episode are having atypical gall bladder pain.
And yes, it's easily mistaken for cardiac pain.

(6,262 posts)Have a sibling now recovered from early diagnosed esophageal cancer and doing great after over 2 years. Had many similar episodes. Also not a spring chicken.
Surgery and recovery were no picnic, but now all is well.
Push to make sure it was checked and stay well! Best wishes...

(27,787 posts)Have them go look and make sure your esophagus is ok. Ask about Barret's syndrome. Have them make sure the esophageal muscle tightens correctly at the bottom too.
I've had this one too. Caused by a hernia in the muscle wall between stomach and lungs.

(15,784 posts)Few years back, I was admitted with significant chest pain. After several tests they did a vessel scan of the chest, wherein they discovered (of all things!) a goiter growing down from the thyroid and hiding behind the breast bone. So, that was dealt with even though it was determined to have nothing to do with the chest pain. There have been several episodes since, the pain resolves with nitro, but nothing ever shows up in the testing. But they tell me each time to avoid trying to outsmart whatever it is, better safe than sorry, get it checked out.
From one non-spring chicken to another, very glad to know you are doing okay.

The important thing is to learn the triggers in your diet.
Try eliminating things one at a time and see what happens.
Her biggest trigger is Black Pepper. I've learned to cook without it and it has made a world of difference for her.

(20,453 posts)We "non" spring chickens have to practice listening to our bodies. I suspect yours gave you a wake up call.
Upper quadrant abdominal pain can mimic a heart attack.
Keep well and tell us if you leaned any specifics with your follow up, will ya?

(46,585 posts)GERD can often manifest as symptoms similar to cardiac if it's bad enough.
I hope you are feeling well soon. Take care.

(8,175 posts)My ex's Mom was sent home from the hospital after being treated for a heart attack and released. When she got home she had more pain and called the doc. He said take some antacids. Her son went to the pharmacy to pick them up and when he got home she was dead.
I'm not trying to scare you, but if the pain comes back it might not have been acid after all. I'm sure they did EKG and everything, but they thought she was OK to go home too.
Hopefully that is all that is going on. I am so glad you took it seriously. Trust your knowledge of your body.
I hope your doc gets you in for a followup very soon.
Please take care.

(31,320 posts)My husband had an experience like that about 10 years ago--and he's an MD--asked me to take him
to ER one Sunday afternoon. Turned out everything cardiac was ok and he's had to watch out for what gives him heartburn
ever since...definitely food/booze related.

(13,989 posts)foods) The pain is often misdiagnosed as acid reflux or- at a certain age - for heart issues. It's no fun, but can be very serious, or worse. Doctors will most often recommend a gall bladder removal, but think long and hard about that. Many if not most people have gall stones (they're more like milk duds than 'stones" and live just fine with them.
Good luck what ever it turns out to be.

(2,004 posts)You may be dehydrated and not know it. Dehydration can sneak up on you in warm weather. Reflux can be exceptionally painful and move into weird spots. I have had it go up my jaw and into my ears, very strange and very scary.
You have my sympathy for going through this. It really is bad.
Don't forget-drink lots of water!
Take care!

(90,202 posts)....your regular doc.
On your own, use GERD precautions: no food 2 or more hours before bedtime, likewise alcohol. Elevate the head of your bed 6 inches (I hated that, so I got one of those foam wedges from the drugstore that carries medical supplies, and I use that to elevate my torso). Ask about Prilosec, which I believe is over the counter now. I was on a maintenance dose of that for years, until my doc switched me to another one by prescription.
Certain foods keep the sphincter open and encourage gastric reflux, hence the prohibitions on certain things too near bedtime: chocolate, alcohol, caffeinated drinks, mint..... Overeating and overweight can put pressure on the same sphincter.
If you turn out to have gastric reflux, take heed. It's damaging. I was one of the many people who have virtually symptomless GERD. Long story short, my vocal chords are damaged and I'm out of the choir.
Best of luck from another non-spring chicken. Stay well!

(16,296 posts)I'm very sensitive to anything that makes me feel queasy or just plain unpleasant (physically , not socially). I get the occasional pressure on both sides of my lower jaw, more like in the upper neck . Told my cardiologist and first thing he asked if I ever suffered from acid reflux, if so - that was probably the cause. Surprised me. I always thought that type of symptom was indicative of heart problems, but I have a monitor and there was no indication of any problem.
Keep the Pepcid and Tums handy and watch out for greasy foods (especially fried ones) and especially in the late evening hours.

(7,968 posts)Yeah, I hear you. I'm a 57 year old overweight (by about 15 lbs) male. I some bad clams while vacationing in New Brunswich this past June. As a result I ended up with a $650 ambulance bill because I couldn't convince them I wasn't having a heart attack. I wasn't - it was just bad clams.

(33,688 posts)Friend of mine had serious chest pains he couldn't explain while in London a couple of months back. His fiancee made sure he went to hospital and there they determined that the problem was a very intense gastrointestinal reaction to some bad seafood from the night before. Thankfully he was otherwise as right as rain and healthy as a horse and sent on his way after a few hours.

(2,150 posts)but now I understand why you're taking a break from DU, which is enough to give anyone indigestion or heart troubles with all the attacks. Yesterday was my day to get beaten to a pulp.
Take care of yourself and do trust what your body is telling you. Don't let the doctor get away with not being
thorough. Be assertive!
I will miss your posts.
