The Virginia TV Shooting and the End of American Exceptionalism
Today's events are a horrifying example of the way we live now.

​I've been away from my TV for a while, so can anyone tell me whether Wayne LaPierre has leaped to a microphone yet to explain that, if there only had been a .50-caliber machine gun or a Stinger missile mounted atop the camera when that guy exercised his Second Amendment rights in Roanoke this morning, the two murdered journalists still would be alive? C'mon, Wayne. It's time for your now-monthly argumentum ad dementum about our country's lunatic attachment to its firearms. A grateful nation awaits your wisdom.

A news crew, doing a completely ordinary happy-face morning feature at a mall get blown away on camera. If this had happened in Somalia, we'd have a lot of earnest talk about the dangers of a failed society. If it had happened in Syria, Lindsey Graham might liquefy entirely and disappear in a rush down a storm drain. But it happened here, in the exceptional home of American exceptionalism, so, once again, we will be told that Alison Parker and Adam Ward are merely more of the price we pay for the exceptional exceptionalism of a free society.

I can absolutely confirm that it exists. There was young woman murdered in front of hundreds of people at a shopping mall in my area (by a crazed, MRA-inspired stalker). She was shot in the back, and yet somehow, a bunch of shit-for-brains trolls started chiming in on Facebook, blaming her for own death by not actually carrying a weapon and being in position to gun down her assailant.

17. The NRA Needs To Go

We need to go hard after both the NRA and it's right wing defenders.

This organization needs disbanded.

This is sadly our best example of American Exceptionalism but in a horrible sense.

Other than that we are on shaky ground. We forcibly took this land from the original inhabitants, killing them while breaking treaty after treaty. One nation has used an atomic bomb on a population and we did it twice.

Oh, and the 2nd amendment argument gun nuts throw at us in nonsense. It was written a long time ago when there was no standing army. It did not mean every mental case in this time should be free to buy all the guns they need.

One of the best, brief analyses I have seen.

Let's be strict constitutionalists like Scalia and the NRA, and follow exactly what the Founding Fathers said in their time, and guarantee that everyone has access to a one shot, muzzle loading firearm. A really proficient shooter can get off more than one shot a minute.
