TRUMKA: It's time we call a spade a spade: The truth about Republicans' hateful, racist rhetoric.

I’m Just Going to Say It: Hateful. Racist.
Richard Trumka

It's time we call a spade a spade: The truth about Republicans' hateful, racist rhetoric.

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of political debate among the Republican presidential candidates about immigrants and aspiring citizens in our country.

And frankly, it has become ugly and dangerous.

Please take a minute to hear my thoughts below.

In Solidarity,

Rich.

and they were welcomed. Then they stole land from the Native Americans and 300+ years later, we have problems with race relations with the Native American community. They enslaved Africans and today, we have problems with race relations with African Americans. They stole land from Mexico and today we have problems with immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere whose only crime is a desire to improve their lives...the very same desire the Pilgrims had all those years ago when they arrived on these shores to spread STDs. The Republicans don't get it, and things are only getting worse. Pretty soon this whole country will get trumped by the rest of the world. Perhaps it's already started.

They know their base is racist. Their motto is:
We're racists, deal with it!

is a buzzword. It's very popular to dislike politics (office, local, national, etc). So, it is a useful way for people who dislike feeling like they need to respect others and decent manners, to categorize those expectations.

People like Rush Limbaugh started calling insults "politically correct" to claim a sense of entitlement that includes a misinterpretation of the 1st Amendment as a right to offend and insult without criticism.

The hate and fear mongering going on today happened before..In the early 20s, after the so called "Great War"..(that is what they called it then..not thinking it could ever happen again) there was the blame game. In the United States that game turned to the immigrants. Pure hate and fear. Those that came over in the early 1900s and the 1910s..well they were to blame. So, easy..

Let's create an immigration law that will control the so called immigrants. Therefore the 1924 immigration Law was created which set.....quotas for each country...Before that, there were no quotas. After that you were illegal if you did not meet the quota. You needed special papers to get in. Approval and forms and so on all after 1924.

Please read this. In the 1870s ,1880s, 1890s, l900s ,1910s, million came from overseas, mainly from Europe. My grandfather and grandmother came in that wave, running from cruel Russian Czar who was killing people. So, what were the requirements to get in?..From what I remember only three:

1. Read some kind of language. as long as you could read. you got in..

2. Stay at Ellis Island for a week to prove you don't have Tuberculosis...then after the week..in you came..oh, one more..

3. You needed a last name. If you did not have one, well the immigrant authorities allowed you to make one up.

The hate and fear was here before. that is all. Of course, it hasn't been here in this generation at the level it is now at. But it has been here before.

Start the debate by prosecuting those employers who ILLEGALLY hire undocumented immigrant workers then after those employers are in prison we can talk about the great wall of Texas.
