Thug rooster put down

The owner of a rooster that attacked an 83-year-old Spring Lake woman who was visiting a loved one’s grave at a southwestern Michigan cemetery has killed the bird.

Lt. Robert Kirk of the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office told MLive.com that the owner decided to put down the rooster and relocate other free-roaming birds from a farm next door to Chambers Cemetery.

The rooster was one of two bothering the woman and her 53-year-old daughter at the cemetery in Geneva Township on May 10. The women retreated to their vehicle after the bird drew blood from the older woman’s leg. ..............(more)

He'd only attack when your back was turned. If you caught him running up to you, he'd stop and peck the ground all innocent-like.

He also had a short attention span. After the first few attacks, I started carrying a 2x4. I heard him coming, like usual but I waited until the last possible second, turned and batted him through the fence. He didn't bother me for a week or so after he recovered his wits.

He eventually got ran over. It wasn't me, but I won't deny that I approved.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I was just composing my post when you finished yours. One day our rooster (named "Ronald," if you can believe that!) chased me as I was headed out to school.

Just like you did, I carried a piece of 2x4 around the yard with me and smacked him in the head with it one day when he almost got me. I thought I killed him until I heard him crowing behind me as I got farther away. He left me alone for a couple of days after that, but then went right back to his old tricks.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]When I was in my teens, one of my brothers had a rooster and 3-4 hens that he let roam free. They stayed on our property, but the rooster was a vicious monster. He "behaved" as long as you were looking directly at him (although he'd try to nonchalantly sidle closer), then he'd attack the minute your back was turned. He also abused the hens, which pissed me off.

We had a sign up at the front sidewalk entry that said, "Beware of Rooster." People who came onto the property only laughed once. I can recall so many anecdotes regarding that bird and even though all the stories make for amusing reminiscences now, I was really glad when he died. Actually, I'm still surprised my parents let him live out his life without putting him down.

as you said, people only laugh once. I was attacked by a
rooster & I'll never forget how painful it was, and how fast
it happened, and how deep the rooster talon dug into my
leg. He came at me from the front.

I grabbed him, took his legs and did a whirlybird over my head and threw him in the air. He never charged anyone again. Dont ever run, just wait for the peck and offer the bottom of your shoe, then chase him. Just like any bully, show you are not afraid.

as they're smaller than an ostrich. My father had a goose in his citrus orchard that was very territorial. It would hiss and rush up to attack anyone it saw. My dad was about ready to off it. We were visiting and he said something about that, so I asked him to let me see what I could do.

I went into the orchard looking for this gander. I found him. He lowered his neck, hissed, and charged me. My response was to run straight toward him, yelling. We didn't make contact. The goose went in the other direction. He never charged any human again. In fact, he turned into quite a pet, and started coming up to people and begging for food.

Stand the birds down. They'll back off. If they don't grab them by the neck and give a shake. That'll stop them permanently.
