Bizarre Mars photos: Signs of life, or signs the Internet has lost its mind?

(CNN)For most of us Earthlings, the photos of Mars taken by the Curiosity rover reveal little more than a desolate red landscape inhabited mostly by rocks. Lots and lots of rocks.

But to the more, er, imaginative minds in our midst, these are no ordinary rocks. They're signs of alien life on the planet next door.

For years, eagle-eyed conspiracy theorists have been trawling through the photos beamed back to Earth by NASA probes and "discovering" mysterious objects that they say proves the existence of extraterrestrial activity on Mars -- a world where lizards, mermaids, traffic lights, jelly donuts and a statue of Barack Obama all apparently coexist in the dusty expanses of the red planet. In reality they're probably all just weirdly shaped rocks, but why spoil the fun?

The latest arrival, as it were, is the sighting this week of a spaceship -- or at least a spaceship-shaped rock -- that UFO buffs believes crash-landed on Mars.

Oh, so you mean this isn't a photo of Sasquatch riding Nessie on the surface of Mars?

It's eerie in a way, because you know that the terrain is like that for the whole planet. It's not like, if you walked for a couple hundred miles, you would find water or anything green. It's just a desolate, lifeless planet of dirt and rocks that go on in an endless loop.

Those are all rocks. People think that they're "aliens" or some kind of life form because of the way our brains identify animals - when something has an "animal-like" shape, our brain exaggerates how much like a life form an object looks like. It's also called "matrixing," or "pareidolia."

This crab-like object was found in a Mars rover. Its unknown exactly who found it, but it is really interesting. It does appear alive. It may be a crab-like animal, or it also may be a plant. Tis object has many arms and one of them goes to the left of the picture a very long ways. That arm is longer than all others. Plant or animal it really doesn’t matter. The significance of this is that it shows signs that it is alive.

It's clearly a scene of mass alien chaos down there.
