Good make up job.

(37,748 posts)To date, the best performance I've seen of LBJ was done by Michael Gambon in the HBO movie, Path to War. Cranston may have the chops to pull it off, but I'll wait until I've seen it.

(45,319 posts)Cranston did 'All the Way' on Broadway where he won the best actor Tony and the play won best play in 2014.

(1,560 posts)John Frankenheimer directed. Michael Gambon, Donald Sutherland, Alec Baldwin, Bruce McGill, Felicity Huffman, Tom Skerritt,... and making the most of a minor role, Gina-Raye Carter as Linda Bird Johnson.

(16,230 posts)and that's a tough thing to beat.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,155 posts)Unless you actually knew they were the same actor, you'd never figure that Hal from Malcolm in the Middle and Walter White from Breaking Bad were being played by the same guy.
So while Walter White is one of the most iconic character's in TV history, he's almost separated away from Bryan Cranston not only in terms of memorably but also physically.
That's unlike the late James Gandolfini, whose Tony Soprano was just as memorable a character, but far more in line with the actor's real appearance. So in post Sopranos roles, you couldn't help separate Gandolfini from Tony Soprano no matter how hard you tried.

(16,230 posts)You're comparing Malcom in the Middle Cranston to the bald bearded Cranston towards the end of BB.
When BB was first on cable, before anyone had heard of it, I saw the first episode and saw Walter with hair on his head and no facial hair and I thought "that's the dad from Malcom in the Middle".

(27,985 posts)I really think he can move on from WW.
Mendocino
(7,482 posts)cheesy little mustache in the first episodes.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)He was hilarious on both.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,155 posts)I did it over the summer (hadn't watched it during its original run except for the last episode) and it was incredible.
Probably the darkest show ever on television but extremely well made.
But yeah, Cranston was hilarious on both Malcolm in the Middle and Seinfeld.
drm604
(16,230 posts)Why would you do that? It would kill the suspense of the entire last season. In fact it would be a spoiler for a lot of the series.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,155 posts)I didn't figure I'd have a chance to watch the entire series before the ending became common knowledge, so I ended up seeing what it was all about and if it was worth the hype.
Turns out it was. Funny thing was, that despite knowing all the main characters' fates ahead of time, it didn't really take away my enjoyment of the series. It was interesting to see how it all came together in the end.
Normally I wouldn't do that but I wasn't expecting to watch the entire series when I watched the final episode. When things get resolved in a final episode like they do, spoilers pretty much go out the window very quickly.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I tend to prefer lighter fare - but I have certainly heard that it is great so maybe I need to give it a shot.

(36,392 posts)Every scene of every episode contributes to the story. No fluff.

(10,095 posts)Or whatever it was he said, he was good in that.

(58,724 posts)He was also funny in a few episodes of King of Queens as the next door neighbor.

(43,155 posts)Bryan Cranston's one hell of a versatile actor, ranging from the comedic to the dramatic.
A lot better than Liev Shrieiber from The Butler. The Butler was a decent movie but probably had some of the worst casting of historical figures I can remember (James Marsden as JFK? John Cusack as Nixon? Lafayette from "True Blood" as MLK? )

(39,909 posts)#2. I will have trouble watching this.
I hated LBJ with a burning passion for the VietNam War and the closed coffin deaths of two of my close friends.
I protested and screamed in the streets,
"Hey~Hey LBJ. How many babies did you kill today?"
Looking back, it shocks me today to realize that LBJ was our last Liberal (I'll say Democratic) President,
and certainly the most Liberal President of the last 1/2 Century.
(Man, I'm getting old.)

Best of all:
LBJ signing the Civil Rights Act 1964 with MLK looking over his shoulder.
That was back when Doing the RIGHT thing was much more important than Political Convenience.
note: LBJ said that signing this bill would cost the Democratic Party the South for a generation.
THAT "generation" is OVER.
It is time to reclaim The South.

(36,392 posts)Now we've gotten to where mandatory for profit health insurance is considered to be on par with lbj's record. The end of our time on the top of the heap.

(33,688 posts)LBJ was the second coming of FDR. It took me years to realize and accept that fact.
And he pushed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts because he thought they were right and necessary. LBJ learned to despise the KKK and the rabid racists from his father Sam, who loathed the Klan.
