According to a blog post by Will's mother, Mary Ann Bell, Stafford engaged her son the entire evening. In the blog, she describes the challenges of being the brother of a sick sister who often draws most of the attention and care because of her illness.
"Matt asked Will to look at the auction items and tell him what thing he would pick if he could pick one," Bell wrote. "He set out to make a difference for Will, someone who suffers so much loss from (Faith's) illness. Someone who is so often overlooked in this mess."
Bell thought Stafford was bidding to intentionally drive up the price of the MNF travel package to Chicago. She realized he wanted to win.
"As he won the package he turned to Will and said, there you go buddy, you go to Chicago, and take your family," Bell wrote. "The look on my son's face, I will never forget. His chin began to quiver, he was about to cry. He quickly jumped up and gave Matt a hug, and thanked him over and over again."
Hutchinson said he was touch by the generosity of Stafford, a Georgia alum.
"Let's be honest, the state of Michigan hasn't gone through the greatest times with the economy and the jobs around here," Hutchinson said Sunday at the golf outing. "To have a guy that's from Georgia get drafted by the Lions and be a very integral part of that team, turning their franchise around, and then to be able to come to a U-M event that he has no affiliation with and donate $15,000 and buy his own tickets that he donated, and then give them to a family whose daughter is going to have surgery in the next couple days here
