It's a "reality show" that holds no real power in the dictatorship of capital.

(14,498 posts)YEAH.
Emma Goldman said that in America, elections..... not religion... is the true opiate of the people.
( I THINK it was Emma. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Nancy Reagan.)

(11,481 posts)I just don't think I've seen it so blatantly laid out like it is this year with Trump.

(58,724 posts)I don't think it was an actual quote from Goldman in real life.

(14,498 posts)But I bet she would WISH she'd said it.
My favorite "Goldman" quote from that film is uttered by Maureen Stapleton. The Beatty character offers to walk her to the subway from his house late at nite in NYC's "dangerous" Greenwich Village.
"Emma" says "Why? I won't hurt anyone."

(269,064 posts)is another classic example - although we should call that one the 'vote until you elect neo-liberals to fuck up your country'.

(11,481 posts)is a common theme now. But yep, it's the same thing. Your "vote" only counts if you "vote" the correct way, in favor of the bourgeoisie and in favor of profit over people.
There's yet another example today in Britain where a currently serving general in the British army said that Corbyn would face a "mutiny" if he were elected British PM. Of course in the interests of correct definition, that would be called a "coup". Ask Allende in Chile in '72. Oh that's right, you can't ask Allende because Pinochet killed him during the coup.

The elites are terrified of Bernie and Trump because it's quite obvious that neither can be bought, Bernie because he seems indifferent to accumulating wealth, Trump because he's too rich to depend on big donors.
Actually this election is turning out more interesting than any I can recall. It's not normal that two candidates people wrote off as crazy (ya know, socialism is just scary right? ) are having so much success.
