Corporate America pretty much sucks.

After 25 years with the same company, I was recently told my job is not in Maryland any more. It is in Georgia. I can "apply" for it if I wish to. I have about 6 months to make a decision, Well, I can't move because I have two elderly parents I am taking care of that cannot be transported to Georgia. I can apply locally with the company for a job with much less income, which I will do until I figure something out. I'm fucked. About 100 other people who work with me are fucked. Work your ass off and this is what you get. Total bullshit.

At age 57, I need too get another job. Any suggestions? I would love to hear them. Just don't tell me I'm an asshole for working for the place so long and having faith in them. I already know that.

That's just horrible. Really horrible.

The reason they're saying you have to apply is to save themselves relocation costs. At least that's what I think.

I'm truly sorry. I wish I could help

You're 2 years over the Official Corporate Expiration Date at which point they either cut you loose, don't let the door bang ya in the ass, or offer you a lower paying job with just as much responsibility.

You've got 5 years until you are eligible for Social Security. Good luck. Just know there are millions of people where you're at.

they are more free than ever to treat people like absolute garbage

by the way, you'd be paid much less in Georgia, too

They make you create your own goals based on your manager's goals which are based on the CEO's goals....on and on.
And figuring out your goals take days /weeks to complete. This then, is the deciding factor on what kind of raise and bonus you will receive. It's a crock of BS.

Let's have less corporate buyouts, and keep more small companies around. Wouldn't that equal more competition—hence the basis of capitalism? The mergers and buyouts need to stop.

Sorry you're job is moving. That sucks. I truly wish you the best. But I so loath working for corporate America.

there should be something you're vested in.

I agree with the others who say you're not the asshole-- used to be a time when you got a gold watch for 25 years, not a kick in the ass.

Like many, many others, kicked out at 27 years from IBM. Be glad you have six months to figure out what you can do. Welcome to corporate America; we are all disposable.

Leaving older workers desperate while continuing to raise the age at which we can collect SS. They know that people of a certain age are desperate and will work for less because that is all they can get. It's disgusting. This country makes me sick sometimes.

The mindset that workers are worthless has now permeated all employers, including small business. I know because most of my accounting work is with various businesses with less than 20 employees. You'd think working side by side with someone would give an employer more respect but it doesn't usually. Greed and money trumps people even at that level.

I am a little older than you and faced the same thing at 54. I went out on my own and grateful I have a skill that allows me to do that. The pay is still low but if I'm going to take a huge pay cut then I'll be my own boss.

I really need to relax. Do you smoke? I know my daughter does. I'm really thinking about asking to smoke a joint with her and see if that helps me calm down and focus. I'm not a pill popper and I don't want to get into heavy drinking. This anxiety is killing me and I really do need something. What do you think?

Anything nature made is better than anything they can cook up in a lab. Smoking rounds out the sharp points in my (head lol) mind. I'd ask your daughter her opinion first, she knows you better. I bet that she'll be all for it. Let me know if it helps, k?
