After Pope Francis wrapped up a successful goodwill tour of the United States, he saw his that goodwill largely undermined when it leaked out that he had met with Kentucky marriage license clerk Kim Davis.
Francis and the Vatican made clear that while he was in Washington DC, the only official one-on-one meeting he had was with a former student of his, Yayo Grassi, who is gay.
... the meeting with Davis was part of a receiving line and that she was essentially slipped in by Washington Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò.
The New York Times says that he (Viganò) is now likely to be removed at the first respectable opportunity.

(5,325 posts)He may retire in January anyway, but it isn't likely that someone as highly placed as an archbishop would be "fired" over something so trivial.

(58,785 posts)was largely "dissipated" by this. Especially since his messages are being quoted by inspired religious leaders of far more denominations than just Catholic.
As for her, most people aren't and weren't paying much attention to her at all. We're weirdos here. We not only watch more than 3 minutes of network evening news a day, including weather, we even read about social issues.

(3,864 posts)I only found one that said the archbishop was likely to receive a chilly reception, not one that says he is likely to be removed.

(45,319 posts)And Francis has certainly not fired the folks who produced that 3 day anti marriage conference at the Vatican with a nasty guest list of bigots far more influential than Davis.
Time Magazine, November 2014:
"This week the Vatican hosted a three-day, international, interreligious colloquium called Humanum, The Complementarity of Man and Woman: An International Colloquium. Its goal was to propose anew the beauty of the relationship between the man and the woman. Speakers came from nearly two dozen countries and a variety of religious traditions, including Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and Taoists.
The presence of American evangelicals and the LDS Church was particularly notable. Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, and Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, each gave speeches, and representatives from the Heritage Foundation and the Family Research Council in Washington attended. President Henry Eyring of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first presidency spoke and Elder Tom Perry of the LDSs Quorum of the Twelve also joined. In the United States, this trio of faiths has worked together to stand against the governments Affordable Care Acts contraception mandate, but it was the first time they were coming together at the Vatican to talk about marriage.
Adds Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council: The atmosphere was almost euphoric as the attendees from six of the worlds seven continents broke from the historic gathering to return to their respective nations renewed in their stand for marriage, he says. The courts may declare otherwise, and Hollywood may depict its demise, but the union of a man and a woman as the natural and enduring definition of marriage will endure until the end.

The deflections get tiresome. They need to stand up and claim their ground or back off.
