Prison Debate Team Beats Harvard Debate Team in National Competition

Three members of the Harvard University debate team competed against three inmates who were convicted of violent crimes. The inmates won the debate, proof that prison isn’t always the end of the line for some people.

The inmates, who are held at the Eastern New York Correctional Facility in the Catskills, are part of the Bard Prison Initiative, which offers higher learning to inmates. The three men are serving prison terms for manslaughter.

Inmates are prohibited from using the internet for research in preparation for such debates, and the Harvard team was stunned by how well-prepared the inmate team was. Judge Mary Nugent took special note of the inmate team’s performance. She said it might seem tempting to favor the prisoners’ team, but the three judges have to justify their votes to each other based on specific rules and standards. “We’re all human,” Nugent said. “I don’t think we can ever judge devoid of context or where we are, but the idea they would win out of sympathy is playing into pretty misguided ideas about inmates. Their academic ability is impressive.”

The prison team had its first debate in spring 2014, beating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Then, it won against a nationally ranked team from the University of Vermont, and in April lost a rematch against West Point.

I'd love to see a video of the event.

But, I have to wonder if the elitists from Harvard were over confident and egotistical by thinking the debate
would be a slam dunk and never even bothered to prepare themselves?

right now our team is full of a bunch of priveledged, entitled 1%ers who think they should win for showing up, and the US Sailing association is backing a system to keep out skilled amateurs and go with their hand picked rich kids. After a disasterous showing in the last summer olympics they decided to double down on the system (like true republicans, if you make a mistake, you always beat your head against the same wall).
Sorry probably a totally irrelevant rant, but it just came out.

…human beings, families, tax payer dollars and the well-being and economy of the entire country our Military-Industrial-Congressional complex is.

If these prisoners had had access to free college education and a level playing filed to begin with, they probably wouldn't even be in Prison.

The Denmark Prison system treats its inmates humanely and college educates all of them while there. The goal is to actually rehabilitate. The recidivism rate is very low

This country has really become too stupid and indifferent to be a leader in the 21st Century World.

These three are in for manslaughter, though, so may not be eligible for parole anytime soon. But this sort of thing helps people see prisoners in a more positive light, as fellow human beings capable of learning. Hope to see more of this kind of positive interaction between those behind bars and the community.

I am sorry to say it is likely you would not recognize Cross X debate today if you did it years ago. I'll include a link to last year's championship round. It makes me cry.

The resolution was

Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase statutory and/or judicial restrictions on the war powers authority of the President of the United States in one or more of the following areas: targeted killing, indefinite detention, offensive cyber operations, or introducing United States Armed Forces into hostilities.

I tell you the resolution because without seeing it, you'd never know what the two teams were arguing about other than which team could curse more.

Here's the video of the championship round. Skip to about the 44 minute mark for the debate to start.
