(149,644 posts)I'm kidding!
That WOULD be one way to accomplish it, though. NOT a good way.

(11,519 posts)however it seems to me that the right wing members of Congress are pretty damned callous when it comes to other's family members lost to gun violence.

(39,343 posts)I was sure Sandy Hook would've done it, but I was wrong. Maybe Luckovich is right.

(62,431 posts)and then called my daughter and told her to give the grandson an extra hug.
My only hopeful thought out of that was that here now was an incident the cowards of congress couldn't ignore.
Even the evil incarnate NRA would have to change their tune after that.
I was oh so wrong and went back to my old philosophy that most people will do nothing until they are directly affected. So sadly I think Luckovich is probably on target.

(34,582 posts)and one that started kindergarten this year. I held it together- barely. But only because I have a lot of experience hiding my emotions. It is not easy being a rock.

(1,606 posts)Sandy Hook was a test of many things, not least of which were objective reason, moral courage, willpower, and the human spirit. Conservatives failed this test almost to the person. As usual, Luckovich has made a powerful point and his satire impels us to consider the question of just what the hell it will take. I doubt that hell freezing over would change a thing.
However, a peaceful, forceful, and concerted revolution of, by, and for the people offers a distinct possibility.

Not sure what conclusion you are drawing from what rates?
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)I didn't say anything about "mass murder rate", so evidently you just threw that in there for strawman purposes.
Not sure why you are having so much trouble with my conclusion, so here's a picture:

(249 posts)According to the CDCs WONDER database, 5.2 out of every 100,000 Americans were homicide victims, on average, from 2010 to 2012. Thats not especially high by global standards; the median country had 4.7 homicide deaths per 100,000 persons over the same period,1 according to the UNODC data. The highest homicide rate in the world was in Honduras, with 87.9 homicide deaths per 100,000 persons.
...
Black Americans are almost eight times as likely as white ones to be homicide victims, in other words.
So for white Americans, the homicide death rate is not so much of an outlier. Its only modestly higher than in Finland, Belgium or Greece, for instance, and lower than in Chile or Latvia.

p.s. Heck, I don't care if this gets me alerted. Black (mostly on black) violence has to stop. Period! It is a epidemic in large Cities like mine. While these mass shootings are sad and they get the headlines -we have a big problem. A much Bigger problem, and I don't know how to fix it. Black lives do matter and I wish I knew how to stop it. I have a crazy idea. As a gun owner why not start "gun safety" programs in the large Cities. You learn RESPECT for a weapon and you never point it at another person -period. All my guns have locks on them and my kids both respect and enjoy them. It's a huge responsibility. And skeet is a lot of fun. I don't even let my kids point fake guns at people. It's that important!

(15,719 posts)you would see a massive move by the GOP to start funding it. I have been around racists for too long. It is in their nature to believe that the "black folks are going to riot" so they have to be prepared. I hear that line from people who I used to think were sane. They really in their heart believe it.

The only way we'll ever see meaningful gun control legislation, is with solid Democratic majorities in both houses.

Wouldn't that be the NRA dream result?

(11,519 posts)The obvious fallacy of that, of course, is that extremely few civilians have the recurrent training to do any real good in a situation like that even if they are armed.

(24,330 posts)The new members elected would likely be anti-legislation and they'd vote to repeal all of it
I just don't think the majority of the public will vote for representatives who support any sort of legislation
Bunch of 1st graders get killed and the general public opposed any legislation
I think if it doesn't directly affect them, they don't care

(16,296 posts)March 1, 1954, three Puerto Rican nationalists seated in the visitor's gallery overlooking the House Chamber drew pistols and fired off 30 rounds at the 243 members attending a debate on immigration. In the resulting bedlam Speaker Joseph Martin of Massachusetts hurriedly declared a recess and took cover behind the rostrum. Five of his fellow members were not so lucky and were wounded, although all survived their injuries. The assailants were subdued and eventually sent to prison. The walnut table used by the Republican leadership still bear the scars from the attack.
