New Dental Device Helps Sleep Apnea Patients
Dr. Dave Ducommun is a dentist who knows about sleep apnea.
"Officially, sleep apnea is if you stop breathing more than five times every hour when you're sleeping," Dr. Ducommun says.
"What happens is when you're sleeping at night, the weight of the mandible and the musculature settles. And as it settles, that musculature closes the airway and you literally stop breathing."
f the sleep study reveals you do have sleep apnea, the number one line of defense is a C-PAP machine.
* But many people cannot tolerate a C-PAP machine. Thankfully, there's a new option. It's a small appliance worn in the mouth while you sleep called a Mandibular Repositioning Appliance.
The appliance holds the lower jaw slightly forward while you're sleeping and doesn't allow the jaw or tongue to fall on the airway, keeping your airway open all night.
"You'll sleep like you haven't slept in a long, long time," Dr. Ducommun says.
The device is not only a life changer, but also a life saver."
