But the University of Phoenix is different. The school has more of their students in debt than any other college or university in the country. While the number that is owed by those students tends to be a lower average, the school doesnt equip the students to find skilled jobs that pay them enough to come close to paying off their loan to the school. According to a Brookings Institute report, about 45% of students who left the University of Phoenix with loans in 2009 have defaulted.
The typical student that defaults on a University of Phoenix loan, the report found, is a person of color and often the first in their family to attend college classes. Now think about the average person who signs up for the military. A 2008 study from Syracuse University (PDF) shows poor and minorities are disproportionately selected for recruitment by the military. The survey found the all-volunteer force continues to see overrepresentation of the working and middle classes, with fewer incentives for upper-class participation.
Perhaps, thats why the Department of Defense is taking such great steps to get University of Phoenix off bases. Theyre being pretty tight-lipped but a WaPo report quotes the DOD chief of voluntary education Dawn Bilodeau saying when we are in receipt of reports on non-compliance. Like a $25,000 concert at Fort Campbell that allegedly was a recruitment event in direct violation of the rules.

(34,661 posts)Fortune 100 Company, and if someone came through the door with one of these so called Sheep Skins from a Diploma Mill,do the interview for Ha-ha's and send them a do not meet our requirement letter. Seen tons of these so called on line Diploma's,really feel for the Candidate. You knew they had taken on a ton of debt in order to better themselves. Yes,some did qualify for open positions that were not dependent on a Degree, and they were made a offer. And we were happy with the results.

Soon after that I learned that the person who turned me down for my insufficient degree had recently earned her Masters through Phoenix U.
Nice.

(15,328 posts)I know the wealthy ones can afford the 60K+ tuitions at the Ivy League (and have the strings to get their spawn into those schools.)
But if those wealthy spawn can't work with real people with real-life experience and real degrees, this country is destined to be another parody of those brits - a bunch of bumbling aristocrats with no real skills.
