Gas or charcoal?

I honor of Memorial Day it has occurred to me that most of my conservative friends favor and use gas grills while my more liberal friends favor and use charcoal. Which do you prefer and why?

To cook what I don't want to cook on charcoal - both suits the job.

I grill almost every day in the spring and summer. I like the easy on and off and easy temp control.

I like charcoal since I don't know anything about propane. It seems expensive or something. It might not be really but just seems it to me since I don't know anything about it.

Boxers are for wearing a suit without undies lines, briefs are for the gym.

Charcoal gives best flavor, gas is way way quicker.

I use lump charcoal when using my Weber and wood when using my smoker. Starting my 12th year as a certified BBQ judge and those two items (charcoal & wood) are all the competitors are allowed. You can use propane, just don't call it BBQ.

We get it, you're better than everyone because you use charcoal and have a smoker. Here's your trophy.

.. but it is so much work and takes so much more time. So I use propane most of the time.

We all know what happened in the Lounge back in 2007.

I'd rather not relive those days.

because I do both. When it's a grill, gas with a smoker box and chips. When its a long barbecue, it's charcoal and chunks. Works for me.

So it's kind of a wash

Right now I only have a charcoal grill. If I had a gas grill I would probably do it more.

We have a smoker that is very low and slow in which we use hardwood only. Not charcoal. Actual smokey real wood.

We have another smoker that uses charcoal for heat and wood chunks for smoke.

We have a plain old charcoal grill.

The gas grill gets used year round and is treated like any other modern appliance. All the others have some "ritual" involved.
