Last year, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen said that he believed in the value of college, but only for math-based majors, rather than the "softer stuff," like English or philosophy.
"I'm sure it's fun, but the average college graduate with a degree in something like English is going to end up working in a shoe store," he said.
Andreessen's comments ignore the fact that you get more out of college than job-specific skills. You learn how to think critically, write well, sell ideas, and interact with people. And the statistics on humanities majors' ability to secure jobs aren't as bad as people think.
Even philosophy, one of the more cerebral and seemingly less practical majors out there, has produced some incredibly successful people. Here are some of our favorite examples. .................................

(112,453 posts)but I could see the irony of Carly Fiorina crossing the stage and kicking Marco so that he started singing the soprano part of a duet. I suspect that she took offense to that comment and that he thinks that she should be welding instead.

(11,017 posts)critically thinking for ones' self must seem mystical and somewhat dangerous.
I do think it would be beneficial for all of the GOPers (and some 'new' democrats) to be required to take an ethics course. Just saying.

What does Waterboy know? Fuck him...let him fall off the earth who cares.

(10,164 posts)...and I'm doing just fine, thanks. And if Andreessen thinks philosophy is a "soft" subject, all that tells me is that he never took a single course. Or if he did, he didn't pass it...
