While General Motors awaits formal notice from the UAW that a four-year agreement has been ratified, the automaker's Buick brand remains intent on importing a compact crossover vehicle from China.
The Free Press reported in August that Buick planned to begin selling the Envision, now produced at a plant in Shandong province of China, by the end of 2016. Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Buick still plans to import the vehicle to the U.S.
Buick spokesman Nick Richards declined to comment on future product plans, both in August and again on Thursday. But Cindy Estrada, vice president of the UAW's General Motors department, wasn't pleased with the prospect.
"After the sacrifices made by U.S. taxpayers and the U.S. workforce to make General Motors the profitable quality company it is today, UAW members are disappointed with the tone-deaf speculation that the Envision would be imported from China," Estrada said in August. "GM should stand by its declaration that it will build where it sells."
UAW spokesman Brian Rothenberg said Thursday the company stands by that statement.

(43,049 posts)because it is one of the most popular brands in China. So, some of them come back here, but it's still a net export for GM.
GM still builds a lot of cars in North America, although that includes Canada and Mexico.

(5,364 posts)This type of labor arbitrage has gone on long before TPP; and it's not "whining" to bring up the massive amount of US job loss from "free trade".
You are obviously in favor of both though.

(5,364 posts)Well that didn't take long.
Years before when they first began building Buicks in China, it was stated it was to satisfy demand there. The much ballyhooed exports meme the corporate shills use try to try to soften us up with every time a discussion on trade comes up are a drop in the bucket compared to US imports: Not only do they fail to make even the smallest of dents in the US/China trade deficit, but they fail to slow the rise in same.
Branding isn't shit as an "export" anyway, and now the cat is out of the bag. We'll no doubt see reports of either overcapacity in their US manufacturing, or how "uncompetitive" it is as the slide toward offshoring even more US production continues.
A bunch of despicable vipers. Of course the corporatrists, and their third-way toadies will cheer this on. Assholes.
