The wisdom of Helmut Schmidt
Germany lost its greatest thinking politician of the post-war era this week. If you aren't familiar with Helmut Schmidt, do yourself a favor and read up on him.
One of my favorite quotes of his is this:
"Politicians and journalists share a sad fate. They have to talk about things today that they will only fully understand tomorrow."
As a man who went from being Chancellor of Germany to the top staff of Germany's most respected liberal political weekly (Die Zeit), he was in a position to know only too well.
