I'm friends with someone on Facebook that I used to hang out with in high school (30 years ago). She was fun and laid back and great. We lost touch for 20+ years and now we chat often on Facebook.
I've gradually noticed she leans Republican and in recent weeks it's become obvious she's really out there, hates Obama but can't explain why, says he's a Muslim, the usual tripe. Now, since the attack in Paris, she's on overload. Obama's letting "terrorist refugees" in so they can ruin our country, etc. The standard garden-variety wingnut spew.
My question is this. She apparently gets at least some of her information from her even crazier husband, and sent me a link to a site that "tells the real truth the government doesn't want us to know!!!!!" called Jews News. I go read it and one of the most prominent stories is about how Obama is bringing in refugees, giving them each $1,000, a Wal-Mart gift card, and social security.
I tried to explain to her that any extreme site like that is dangerous and that they make up the crap they know their rabid audience wants to hear no matter how outrageously false because then they get to push their own insane agendas and also get advertisers and make a couple bucks etc.
Has anybody got any suggestions for how to try to force feed sanity to somebody like this? She says the Obama/Wal-Mart story must be true, why would anybody make it up? Today I want to reach through the goddamn internet and strangle people.

(4,302 posts)she told me that her husband thinks the only reason Obama hasn't been impeached is because he's black, so they can't.

Is your friend in Cincinnati by any chance? I find that lots of my HS pals that stayed there (I left 25 years ago) have succumbed to the constant barrage of Conservative propaganda. Even the African Americans.
