Some candidates will gobble up any amount of excrement in order to get nominated. Senator Rubio was asked about Trump's suggesting that we close down mosques. Here's the senator's response in its entirety, by way of the Nexis transcript:
"And that we have -- the biggest problem we have is our inability to find out what these places are because we've crippled our intelligence programs, both through an authorized disclosure by a traitor, in other words, Snowden, or by some of the things that this president has put in place for the support even of some from my own party to diminish our intelligence capabilities.
"So, whatever facilities being used, it's not just a mosques. Any facility that's being used to radicalize and inspire attacks against the United States should be a place that we look at."

And here's another excerpt from e.e. cummings "i sing of Olaf": "There is some shit I will not eat."

(4,033 posts)because they radicalize and inspire student to "think". There we have it, the only places of higher education left will be Christian right wing schools. Because in Cruz's world they don't "radicalize" youth and they're not taught to think & question. In his world.

So I guess that what we have here is a dreaded hotbed of gay, Muslim prison inmates who must constantly present their papers

(55,745 posts)I had not heard nor read this poem from e.e. cummings before the last minute. And I've been here a while, getting there at 58.
"War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today." --Letter to a Navy friend, quoted in Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1965), p. 88.

(55,745 posts)i sing of Olaf glad and big
XXX
i sing of Olaf glad and big
whose warmest heart recoiled at war:
a conscientious object-or
his wellbelovéd colonel(trig
westpointer most succinctly bred)
took erring Olaf soon in hand;
but--though an host of overjoyed
noncoms(first knocking on the head
him)do through icy waters roll
that helplessness which others stroke
with brushes recently employed
anent this muddy toiletbowl,
while kindred intellects evoke
allegiance per blunt instruments--
Olaf(being to all intents
a corpse and wanting any rag
upon what God unto him gave)
responds,without getting annoyed
I will not kiss your fucking flag
straightway the silver bird looked grave
(departing hurriedly to shave)
but--though all kinds of officers
(a yearning nations blueeyed pride)
their passive prey did kick and curse
until for wear their clarion
voices and boots were much the worse,
and egged the firstclassprivates on
his rectum wickedly to tease
by means of skilfully applied
bayonets roasted hot with heat--
Olaf(upon what were once knees)
does almost ceaselessly repeat
there is some shit I will not eat
our president,being of which
assertions duly notified
threw the yellowsonofabitch
into a dungeon,where he died
Christ(of His mercy infinite)
i pray to see;and Olaf,too
preponderatingly because
unless statistics lie he was
more brave than me:more blond than you.

It is said to be based on e.e. cumming's experiences after getting drafted into World War I, a friend of his was singled out for the Treatment after mentioning he opposed the horrors of war.

(82,849 posts)There is something you and your fellow Senators could do: Vote to confirm Adam Szubin as under secretary of the treasury for Terrorism and Financial Crimes. He's only been waiting about 200 days for a vote. You think if you identify the income sources for terrorist organizations and cut them off, you might be able to affect their ability to buy weapons?
Gosh, if only the highly paid professionals in the Fourth Estate could ask Sen. Rubio about that.
Cyrano
(15,043 posts)are well known. But who knows where the senator gets his funding from?
And topping the list of financiers of terrorism is Saudi Arabia which no one in our government, or media, ever seems to want to talk about.
The Saudis have been funding "terrorism" for about ... oh, forever. Their Wahhabi Schools teach hatred of the modern world and a return to the "pure, fundamentalist" version of Islam in which everything modern is evil and needs to be destroyed.
So, Senator Rubio, why don't you want Adam Azubin looking into the financing of terrorism? I don't know whether or not you get any Saudi money. But why not confirm someone who can look into terrorist finances.
As we learned during the Nixon era, "follow the money" solves much.

(82,849 posts)It's almost like the Republican-controlled Senate doesn't want to confirm someone whose job it would be to identify those funding sources and have the authority to shut them down or enforce sanctions on the bankrollers. Just so very odd. I'd like to hear what anyone in the Senate thinks about this, and why they're dragging their feet in confirming Szubin.
