(54,436 posts)In case you want the original: "Natürlich, das einfache Volk will keinen Krieg [
In English-speaking circles, that one is even more famous than his "Meier" quote early on in the war: "Wenn auch nur ein feindliches Flugzeug unser Reichsgebiet überfliegt, will ich Meier heißen!" (If just one enemy plane flies over the territory of the Reich, then my name is Meier!--a LOT of Germans were making some nasty "Meier" jokes before the war ended)
By the way, one of THE best movies about the senseless of war was a German film from the 1950s: "Die Brücke (The Bridge)." Just brilliant. The regional commandant knows the war will be over in a few days, and orders "no unnecessary deaths." A bunch of gung-ho teenage boys are called up, and can't wait to get into uniform, grab their guns and save the Reich. Their parents are horrified. They are ordered to guard a bridge, which turns out to be the bridge over a small stream running through their home village. Instead of no unnecessary deaths....well you can guess the rest. It does not end well.

(6,440 posts)I've been cautious about this sort of thing ever since I first read that fake quote from Julius Caesar that did the rounds shortly after 9/11 and thought "that doesn't sound like Shakespeare".

(7,875 posts)He said it during his deposition at the Nuremberg Trial. I've also read it in more than one book. I can see how one might think it could be bogus because it so perfectly describes the BushCo response to 9/11, and it was around that time that this quote started getting attention again. I've always said the Republicans learned a great deal from the Nazis.

(1,145 posts)Both al-Qa'ida and ISIS were created and established with guidance from the CIA, who recruited and armed these religious fanatics to fight against enemies the American public wouldn't quite get behind openly fighting with the US military.
After 9/11 and the blatant and unbelievable lies the US government told about them, it's very clear to see that even though we've been using these extremists to fight covert wars for us (in Afghanistan in the 80's, Syria now), they also serve as the designated perpetrators when a terrorist attack is staged. Why stage false flag terrorist attacks? Because it's the best way to drum of public fear and anxiety and justify the routing of more public dollars into the defense/security industry and the many corporations that benefit as a result.
If anyone has seen the movie "V for Vendetta", you will get a fictional picture of how easily a government can stage attacks against its own people, blame the designated enemy, cow the public into obedience, and make war and profit. The movie is a fictional reenactment of a 9/11-type attack and features a mask-wearing hero "V" who fights to uncover the plot. It inspired hacker group Anonymous and is a good movie to see.
If people would simply understand how easily our government can tell us damn near anything and have us believe it, then they'd be angry and on the White House lawn with pitchforks.

(2,334 posts)conclusion that it is a mistake to conflate smart with clever. I think its entirely possible for a person to be quite clever but not particularly bright. I've known a few, and some smart ones who couldn't MacGyver if they had to. Maybe this is why we have flash in the pan celebrities as well.

Today, U.S. media is ginning up fear, fear, FEAR, with 24/7 coverage of frightening scenes in Europe, and beating those war-drums LOUDLY.
Wish they were as diligent in reporting 24/7 the flag-draped caskets of American soldiers coming home from Afghanistan and Iraq. But of course, that would shorten the war and minimize profits for the MiC.

I think it is even better than 911 actually.
