Frank Gifford suffered from brain disease, possibly football-related, family says
By Sam Farmer
NOVEMBER 25, 2015, 12:38 PM
NFL great Frank Gifford, who died in August of reported natural causes, had a brain disease that may have stemmed from his Hall of Fame football career, his family said in a statement released Wednesday.
The family revealed that it had medical researchers study Giffords brain after he died at age 84, and that those pathologists found evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative brain disease.
We decided to disclose our loved ones condition to honor Franks legacy of promoting player safety dating back to his involvement in the formation of the NFL Players Association in the 1950s, the family said in a written statement. His entire adult life Frank was a champion for others, but especially for those without the means or platform to have their voices heard. He was a man who loved the National Football League until the day he passed, and one who recognized that it was and will continue to be the players who elevated this sport to its singular stature in American society.

(45,251 posts)1. As Bob Costas said today, the same is true of 86 of the 91 players whose survivors
provided their brains for study. 86 of 91.
Committing suicide by shooting in the gut so his brain would remain intact for posthumous examination as did one player, was quite a statement.
Not a fan of boxing, either.

(20,631 posts)3. I believe TWO players actually committed suicide in that manner -
Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, if I'm not mistaken.
