Susan J. Demas: The media can't surrender to a fact-free presidential race

"The era of fact-checking is over," proclaimed the kicker for a Washington Post piece bemoaning Donald Trump's "fact-free campaign."

I admit I read Chris Cilizza's analysis instead of getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner (which was most decidedly less depressing).

He argues that while all politicians bend the truth, there traditionally have been lines you don't cross. But Trump's incendiary, baseless claim that "thousands of people were cheering" in New Jersey on 9/11 obliterates said line.

Trump supporters have, unsurprisingly, decided the biased "liberal" media is lying, and their hero isn't. This is not exclusive to them, however.

On the contrary, this was all by design. Nothing would please the media more than the chance to be the P.T. Barnum to this circus, because it gets them twice as much money for half as much work.
