More SC news: Sheriff candidate charged in kidnap attempt on retired judge

rlowe@thestate.com — The race for sheriff in Oconee County took a bizarre turn Wednesday with the arrest of Republican candidate James Bartee for trying to hire someone to kidnap a retired S.C. circuit judge. Bartee is one of four candidates competing June 12 to be the Republican nominee in November for Oconee County sheriff.

The former Secret Service agent’s qualification for the office was challenged by retired S.C. Circuit Judge James C. Williams Jr. Williams, who is supporting another candidate, had sued to get Bartee off the ballot, arguing Bartee is not a “certified law enforcement officer” under S.C. law and therefore can't run for sheriff. A court hearing was to have been held Wednesday on the case in Anderson. The hearing was under way when Bartee was arrested by State Law Enforcement Division agents at the courthouse, according to The Independent Mail of Anderson.

Bartee was charged with “solicitation to commit a felony.” According to the arrest warrant, Bartee tried to “encourage and solicit an individual” to kidnap Williams. He allegedly gave that individual money to purchase items needed in the kidnapping. SLED said evidence includes audio of the solicitation.

I think water from the Savannah River Nuclear Plant has contaminated the ground water and has mutated whatever brains people have.

Why read the funnies when the news will do?

Oconee County is really our only 'mountain' area. Could be anything up there.
I went to college near there, and it does have some great eating establishments. You just have to know which are great and which are Russian roulette eating. None of them look like possible places to eat from the outside.

Could it be that chips of lead paint from the walls of those dives are falling into their food? Or, is a "Deliverance" type thing going on?

I know what you mean about the "Russian roulette eating". Lots of that in the flatter parts of the state, too. There was one restaurant in a town on the border of the Savannah River Site that had great food, but was the biggest craphole on the planet. When it was shut down, we thought the health department might have done it. But, it turned out the owner was caught evading the tax man. I miss their sweet potato souffle and broccoli casserole, although I don't know why. Every bit of it that I have ever eaten is being carried around on my hips and butt.

It's downstream. I think it's all that sweet tea and greasy food that's causing brain plaques. Although, some of them also wrap themselves so tightly in the flag that it cuts off the blood flow to their brains.
