Bill to prevent DNC liquor drought

Those heading to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., need not worry about liquor supplies running dry the state legislature is expected to pass a bill to ensure booze flows freely on Labor Day.
The states Republicans and Democrats have found common ground on a bill that would ease access to alcohol for convention attendees, according to WRAL-TV in North Carolina. The legislation is expected to pass without much opposition.
Under current law, state-run liquor stores in North Carolina are required to close on Labor Day, which falls on Monday, Sept. 3 the day before the Sept. 4-6 convention. The stores are also required to close on Sundays, possibly creating a logistical nightmare for bars and restaurants, who wouldnt be able to stock up ahead of the convention rush.
The restaurants are going to be selling an awful lot of liquor on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the Democrats coming into town, said Rep. Bill Brawley, a sponsor of the bill, to WRAL. Part of the way it was explained to me was that most restaurants would not have sufficient secure storage space to store enough liquor over the weekend.
The bill in question, H. 1121, would allow state-run ABC liquor stores in Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is located, to remain open on Labor Day. The law would create an exemption only for 2012 and wouldnt apply to other counties in the state.
