This was when he was still running - or lobbying for VP. (Though I doubt his former #1 to his vp would have given Obama a positive recommendation!) The letter saying she wanted to pay bills that could give him PR problems - even mentioning avoiding limits - is pretty bad. The campaign should have politely rejected it out of hand as illegal. That the campaign did nothing and then later Young got money from her.

The other possibility is that the Edwards team succeeded in getting them to believe that it might have been Young unilaterally using that connection to get money.

I lean to the former because there was no a decision on the other Mellon charge which happened later.
