Church Responds to Inquiries Regarding Oregon Armed Occupation
SALT LAKE CITY —
In response to news media inquiries, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the following statement Monday, January 4 (for more context on this issue, see this story from the Washington Post):

While the disagreement occurring in Oregon about the use of federal lands is not a Church matter, Church leaders strongly condemn the armed seizure of the facility and are deeply troubled by the reports that those who have seized the facility suggest that they are doing so based on scriptural principles. This armed occupation can in no way be justified on a scriptural basis. We are privileged to live in a nation where conflicts with government or private groups can — and should — be settled using peaceful means, according to the laws of the land.

5. I checked: the word 'moron' was invented later

From the etymology dictionary, circa 1910.

Or Joseph Smith would not have chosen that name for his angel.

I was unaware Joseph Smith also invented a 'Captain Moroni'. But my original point stands: that Joseph Smith would have avoided using this name if the word 'moron' had existed in English then. Anyway, in context, 'Captain Moron' would apply just fine to this self proclaimed militiaman in Colorado.

8. Also gotta love the presumption of a wannabe promoting himself to unearned military rank

They have some actual military veterans (including some who have embroidered their stories by falsely claiming to have served as a Ranger, etc.), but most are wannabes who talk tough, play with guns and play dress-up in military camo.

All believers in Angel Moroni gain immediate status of Navy SEALs heroes.

10. NOW you tell me!

After I went and made Captain the hard way. And did it in the non-elite straight Infantry.

I was a draftee, retired from the Army as a Captain after 4-1/2 years in. Retired for disability as a result of combat wounds sustained while serving as a First Lieutenant Infantry Platoon Leader in Vietnam (101st Airborne Division).

If only I'd known I could have skipped all that and dressed up, brandished a big, mean-looking gun, and just told people I was Ranger/Delta Force/ SF/ Seal.

11. With your background, you could become Colonel Kurtz in 'Apocalypse Now'

All you have to do is believe in angel Moroni, and **shazam** you'll become Kurtz.

(I should however point to you straight that being Colonel Kurtz is prestigious, but can have drawbacks, especially if a US speedboat lands in your little makeshift village/camp in the jungle. If this happens, do NOT lend a machete to the guys on that boat)

13. He stole the name from Captain Kid stories (an island off of Africa)

"Off the eastern coast of Mozambique in Africa is an island country called “Comoros.” Prior to its French occupation in 1841, the islands were known by its Arabic name, “Camora.” There is an 1808 map of Africa that refers to the islands as “Camora.”

Camora is near center in the above 1808 Map of Africa

The largest city and capital of Comoros (formerly “Camora”)? Moroni. “Camora” and settlement “Moroni” were common names in pirate and treasure hunting stories involving Captain William Kidd (a pirate and treasure hunter) which many 19th century New Englanders – especially treasure hunters – were familiar with."
