*No link provided since this comes from the sewer over at FR, but when I read it it struck me as the best description of those who want to openly carry their firearms everywhere at any time.
"Situational awareness trumps all! I let nobody close to me and my head is on a swivel in bathrooms, parking lots, retail/restaurant lines, basically every where. Somebody wants mine they will get it business end first. Action beats reaction every time."
No paranoia here. Nope. None at all. (And he was specifically talking about being in a WalMart bathroom).

(24,780 posts)Greatly exaggerated sense of importance. No ones ever tried to mug him and he's convinced that's why. Won't even consider that no one gives a damn about him.

(10,164 posts)Okay, not as extreme as this guy (and certainly not in bathrooms), but it's a bit like this. It's just a part of being a woman in our "civilized" age.

(82,849 posts)There's being aware of one's surroundings and taking mental note of sketchy characters in the vicinity. The description of the Free Republic fellow sounds like he draws his weapon 4-6 times a day, usually to intimidate flickering shadows and suspicious leaves.

(10,362 posts)I was just about to say this is life for millions of women in big cities. In the bad areas, it's life for everyone. 3 dead and 20 wounded is a typical summer weekend around the South Side of Chicago.
already nearly 130 people shot so far in 2016 in Chicago and we are only 12 days into the year....I'd have my head on a swivel also.

(38,322 posts)It was my good fortune to grow up in a household with a dragon named Spot, and many dogs. Anyone the dogs accepted was probably okay.
If you bumped into a naked stranger walking out of the bathroom in the middle of the night, no big deal.
I think Spot ate the bad ones.
I have a guardian angel too, but he's a lazy rat bastard who is always amused to see me suffer whenever I do something outrageous and get burned for it. Nevertheless, I'm not dead yet. I think he figures the scars will help me remember which reduces his workload. With a little over half a century wisdom now, I try not to trouble him. The scars really do help me remember.
If I was in the habit of shooting strangers I found skulking about, even strangers with guns, even people who are threatening me, then I'd be a mass murderer.
It's my experience that once the guns come out everything is FUBAR, especially for the good guys.
Mostly the bad guys with guns are already living in a world that's FUBAR. Some of them are cops and soldiers too.

A McMinn County man is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg after accidentally shooting himself.
It happened Monday at the Walmart in Athens.
Athens Police say the man was reaching into his back pocket, where he kept his Taurus PT738 handgun holstered, for a tissue. Instead he grabbed the trigger and it went off shooting him in the back of his right thigh.

Andrew Seals, 24, entered the store restroom around 1 p.m. on Sunday, KPHO reports. As pulled down his trousers, Seals' Ruger .357 caliber revolver fell out of it's holster, hit the ground and inadvertently fired.

Okay, okay...sometimes it's a Chik-fil-A
An Ohio man is recovering, though likely more from embarrassment than his injury, after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while in the bathroom of a Fairfield Township Chick-Fil-A restaurant on Tuesday.

(11,802 posts)I can't imagine going through life like this. I'm a a 5' 10" 150 lb white dude. Not exactly a big man. Yet, somehow, I don't go through life afraid of everything including my own shadow. I kinda pity this fucker. How can you enjoy life with your "head on a swivel at all times". Poor paranoid bastard.

(24,890 posts)i am 5'8" and 165lbs and in pretty good shape for 48 years old. i have trained with free weights and other resistance devices since 16 years old so i have always been pretty fit. but still not 6 foot tall.
with that said still not a big guy and still not paranoid. i tend to always know my surroundings (which is common sense) but no gun is needed and i like to be relaxed not clenching and jacking my jaw and looking for disaster to strike.
crazy paranoid types scare me more than isis (that 70s tv show chick) could ever imagine.
i pity them too but i also am sick to shit with them.
