In an interview this morning on This Week, Donald Trump cited his desire to help people as the reason he favors government-funded universal health coverage.
Unlike Ted Cruz, Trump said, I have a heart. If somebody has no money and theyre lying in the middle of the street and theyre dying, Im going to take care of that person, Trump said.
Host George Stephanopoulos asked Trump how do you do it? And Trump explained his plan thusly: Were going to work with our hospitals. Were going to work with our doctors. Weve got to do something. You cant have a a small percentage of our economy, because theyre down and out, have absolutely no protection so they end up dying from, you know, what you could have a simple procedure or even a pill. You cant do that. Well work something out. That doesnt mean single payer. And I mean, maybe hes got no heart. And if this means I lose an election, thats fine, because, frankly, we have to take care of the people in our country. We cant let them die on the sidewalks of New York or the sidewalks of Iowa or anywhere else.

This will cost Trump a lot of conservative votes but I still enjoy the shots at Cruz.

(17,047 posts)"working with hospitals and working with doctors" means what?

(13,877 posts)from HRC either. Bernie has, IMO, put more out than she has. And that's another reason why it's suicide to "put a plan out there". It can be nit picked to death before one is in the position to begin to work it.
IMO, until the President is in office, and all the shifting and changing that causes, no one really knows what is possible. I wish they'd all just say that. This is what I'd like to see. Then we can work out the details. Because, as Obama found out much to his chagrin, was that it's a whole different story sitting behind that big desk in the White House.

It would be a titanic fight between him and the medical insurance/Pharm industries. But at least it would test how great a deal maker he is. Maybe he would "make them an offer they can't refuse."

Trump is not offering anything we don't already have.

(61,703 posts)health care. Essentially, Trump is suggesting Free Clinic care for the uninsured. We already have that. It's lousy health care. It's what's the matter with our health care system. No continuity of care, no integration into comprehensive care, no follow-up care. He's describing emergency care. We already have that and it sucks.

(2,931 posts)Put tin foil hats on, but Trump was at one time a democrat. He went out to the republican side and went bat shit crazy right wing and gave them all they wanted to hear. He says he can shoot someone and not lose a vote. Now hes saying he is in favor of universal health care. Wow, is he a stealth democrat troll infiltrating the GOP? This theory makes me giggle like a 12 year old girl....

(18,652 posts)If not single-payer, if not everyone who's qualified to have it, what's your plan, Donald?
Answer: he doesn't have one. He's going to get the best minds together, like his buddy Carl Icahn, who btw, I decided to learn something about today. Here is from wikipedia, and I only got up to the mid- 1980's:
snip: Business career and interests[edit]
Icahn began his career on Wall Street as a stockbroker in 1961 and in 1968, he formed Icahn & Co., a securities firm that focused on risk arbitrage and options trading.[10][11] In 1978, he began taking controlling positions in individual companies.[2] He has taken substantial or controlling positions in various corporations including RJR Nabisco, TWA, Texaco, Phillips Petroleum, Western Union, Gulf & Western, Viacom, Uniroyal, Dan River, Marshall Field's, E-II (Culligan and Samsonite), American Can, USX, Marvel Comics, Revlon, Imclone, Federal-Mogul, Fairmont Hotels, Blockbuster, Kerr-McGee, Time Warner, Netflix, Motorola, and Herbalife.
Icahn developed a reputation as a ruthless "corporate raider" after his hostile takeover of TWA in 1985.[12] The result of that takeover was Icahn systematically selling TWA's assets to repay the debt he used to purchase the company, which was described as asset stripping. In 1988, Icahn took TWA private, gaining a personal profit of $469 million, and leaving TWA with a debt of $540 million. In 1991, Icahn sold TWA's prized London routes to American Airlines for $445 million.[13]
Icahn also attempted the grand prize of U.S. Steel, launching a hostile takeover for 89% of the industrial giant for $7 billion ($15.1 billion in 2015) in late 1986. snip
