Jeb Bush: "My mom was fortunate not to have a child-abuse hotline available"

Recounting how many times people in New Hampshire have come up to him praising his mother, Bush made sure to emphasize just who was the disciplinarian in the Bush clan when he was growing up in Texas.

"I jokingly say that when we were growing up in Midland, in Houston, that mom was fortunate not to have a child-abuse hotline available," he said, as attendees laughed, explaining that "the discipline of learning right and wrong was her doing."

But holy smokes, can we for crissakes kill that zombie lie that the "first job" or the "most important job" of the President is to protect the American people? I noticed it a-borning during George W. Bush's reign of error, and Barack Obama has continued it albeit in a lower register.

The first, most important job of the President of the United States is to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. Without the Constitution, there is no American people. When a President thinks his or her first, most important job is to protect the American people, we get war crimes like unprovoked invasions and occupations of other countries; torture regimes; endless incarceration without charge or trial; First Amendment zones for dissenters, out of sight and out of mind of the leaders; and other violations of the Constitution in the name of "national security."
