Congress should drop Planned Parenthood witch hunt

Posted Feb. 4, 2016 at 2:01 AM

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and her Democratic congressional colleagues are right: It’s time for Congress to cease its witch hunt against Planned Parenthood, which provides vital health care services to our nation’s low-income women and families.

Shaheen and her colleagues sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan and GOP leaders in the House and Senate, asking them to “end all ongoing Congressional investigations examining Planned Parenthood, and to stop political efforts to undermine women’s access to healthcare.”

Shaheen and her colleagues wrote the letter after a Texas grand jury cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing relative to a legal fetal tissue program and, instead, indicted two anti-abortion activists, charging them with committing crimes to create a now-discredited video that abortion opponents seized on, hoping it would damage the organization.

“On Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, a Texas grand jury exonerated Planned Parenthood and instead, indicted the creators of highly edited, deceptive videos designed to undermine our nation’s largest provider of women’s health care on felony charges of tampering with government records,” Shaheen and her colleagues wrote. “In addition to the Texas grand jury, 12 other states have concluded independent investigations and cleared Planned Parenthood of wrongdoing.”........................
