LaVoy Finicum's death in Oregon occupation prompts memorials across country

Yeah, it's totally inexplicable why law enforcement might shoot you, after you spend a month loudly advocating for a revolution against the federal government, announcing your intentions to "defend yourself" from those same people, and then reach for your gun.

Robert "LaVoy" Finicum was shot to death by the side of a remote Oregon road. Few were there to see him die, but hundreds of people around the country have indicated they will attend rallies and vigils in his memory this weekend.

...

Though the FBI said Finicum was reaching for a gun before he was shot, some rally organizers said he should not have died.

"If he was breaking laws, they should have arrested him. He didn't have that chance," said Krista Etter, who has scheduled a rally in front of the federal courthouse in West Palm Beach, Florida. "He didn't get to be heard to prove he was guilty of anything."

...

One of the largest rallies this weekend is scheduled for Feb. 6 at the Washington Capitol in Olympia. As of Feb. 4, 200 people had indicated they would attend.

"We will stand to show that We, AMERICANS, will never allow one more innocent person to die at the hands of the Government," reads the event description on Facebook.

... is legion. It appears to be a default excuse for a LEO to shoot a citizen. Most who are shot under such conditions, however, do not publicly express beforehand their intention of not being taken alive.

Ultimately, I think this was a case of suicide-by-cop, unlike many other officer-involved shootings.

Brown and Johnson then fled, with Wilson in pursuit of Brown. Brown stopped and turned to face the officer, then Brown moved toward him.[6] Wilson fired at Brown several times in total, all shots striking him in the front, with the possible exception of the two bullets fired into Brown's right arm.[7] In the entire altercation, Wilson fired a total of twelve bullets;[8] the last was probably the fatal shot.[9][10][11] Brown was unarmed and moving toward Wilson when the final shots were fired.

I should not make fun, a man is dead. But these guys started an occupation forgetting the first rule of warfare, an army, even a misguided occupation of a federal wild life refuge, relies on a full stomach.

seems to me, he DID have that chance, but he opted to try to run a roadblock and plowed into a snowbank instead
even then, he could have simply kept his hands up and been arrested like the rest of the group

"We, AMERICANS, will never allow one more innocent person to die at the hands of the Government"
of course, when an unarmed black youth is shot dead by cops with minimal provocation, these same people will argue until the sun goes down that he deserved it because he's a "dangerous thug" or some other such bullshit.

In the folk tradition, I present my version of an old Irish folksong
Sung to this wonderful Irish tune (Tim Finnegan's Wake):
https://www.flutetunes.com/tunes.php?id=434

Finicum lived on a western ranch, a crazy coot and mighty dumb
He claimed he owned the public land and stood his ground with an old shotgun

You see he'd a sort of a rightwing way with a sense of entitlement he was born
To help him on his way each day, he'd ruffle some feathers every morn

Whack fol the dah now dance to yer partner around the floor yer trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told you? Lots of kooks at Finicum's Wake

One morning Finicum full of bull, his head felt heavy which made him shake
Charged the cops and he lost his life, and they carried him home his corpse to wake
Rolled him up in a nice blue tarp, and laid him out upon the bed
The Constitution at his feet and a bunch of snacks at his head

Whack fol the dah now dance to yer partner around the floor yer trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told you? Lots of kooks at Finicum's Wake

His friends assembled at the wake, and Mrs Finicum called for lunch
First she brought in teaparty cake, then pipes, tobacco and whiskey punch
Cliven Bundy began to cry, "Such a nice clean corpse, did you ever see,
Le Voy my boy, why did you die? Now Harney County will never be free!"

Whack fol the dah now dance to yer partner around the floor yer trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told you? Lots of kooks at Finicum's Wake

Then Fluffy Unicorn took up the cry "Bundy" says he "you're wrong, I'm sure"
Bundy gave him a belt in the gob and left him sprawling on the floor
Then the war did soon engage, t'was hand to hand and man to man
Militia law was all the rage and a row and a ruction soon began.

Whack fol the dah now dance to yer partner around the floor yer trotters shake
Wasn't it the truth I told you? Lots of kooks at Finicum's Wake.
