A growing number of young girls are being forced to marry in Iran, UN rights experts warned Thursday, decrying laws permitting sexual intercourse with girls as young as nine.
Following a review of the situation in Iran, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) urged the country to repeal all legal provisions that authorize, condone or lead to child sexual abuse.
The committee, which is made up of 18 independent experts who monitor the implementation of international childrens rights treaties, said it was seriously concerned over reports that child marriages in Iran were on the rise.
A growing number of girls at the age of 10 years or younger
are subjected to child and forced marriages to much older men, CRC said.
Compounding the problem were laws allowing sex with girls as young as nine, and a lack of criminalization for sexual abuse of even younger children, it said.
The committee also lamented a law obliging wives to fulfill sexual needs of their husbands at all times, which it stressed places child brides at risk of sexual violence, including marital rape.

(41,831 posts)No where in the middle east. There was a time I wanted to visit Egypt just to see the Pyramids...now even if I won the free round trip tickets, I would give them away. Shame, that a place with so many historic sites, would have such hidden threats.

It's a couple steps away from what is going on in Iran.

(16,311 posts)You are probably right though in terms of risk, I recently read something about young Japanese kids riding the subway to school and how no one thought it was dangerous because it wasn't.
