And yet, there's the other side of his personality. Despite his extremely banal, simplistic and indefensible right wing positions, those who know him best say he's brilliant. He clerked for Rhenquist. He might be the Anti-Christ that the Evangelicals fear!

He also looks soft, with his midriff wanting to pour over his belt. And his bald spot is only minisculely less ridiculous that Scott Walker's.

He's singularly unappealing physically, even to men, which really says something.

You have to wring it out like a grease-soaked kitchen rag. And there's always more, as if the rag is self-replenishing.

He's manipulative to a point beyond what traditional instruments can gauge. The Queen in the Snow White tale poisons an apple, intending to present it to Snow White, then disguises herself and does present it. I see Cruz as holding that example high in his system of personal values. It feels as if he is channeling that apple-poisoning Queen 24/7. Turns out the Queen has tried poisoning several times before, trying to rid herself of this beautiful rival.

Cruz's old man is a nutcase from the word go. More shrewd than smart, the old man has been preaching hellfire and brimstone forever. I don't like his declaration that God has chosen Ted as our next president. I think voters will make that call and I don't think Ted is going to be on the ballot.

some things but not enough of those things to represent the truth.

A lot of fundies go to "Bible study" groups organized through their churches. The lessons from Scripture are picked in advance and tend to reinforce the heavy rightwing bias of the church community as a whole. Rafael conducts himself the way pastors of such churches do -- he's at the top of the heap under which all this rightwing "Bible study" is going on. It's propaganda, of course, and not actual study, since actual study would involve critical thinking, and fundies flat-out don't do critical thinking.

It creates a dangerous imbalance. Ted Cruz seems to be a human version of that whole system. Trump is loud-mouthed and bigoted, but Cruz is quiet, bigoted, and darkly mercurial.

Frightening bunch, the Cruz clan.

being on the physically fugly side myself and knowing I'm not entirely fugly on the inside then I can't judge someone else that way.

With Cruz I heard him talk one time a few years ago and ever since the sight of his face makes me want to punch him. It doesn't have anything to do with what he said in that talk. I think maybe his overall physical mannerism and the fact his inner ugly just sort of oozes out all the time.
