Porter Ranch Gas Leak Stopped
The blowout has released more than 2 million tons of methane above LA's San Fernando Valley


The gas well above Porter Ranch that has been leaking since October has been temporarily capped, Southern California Gas Company said Thursday.

Thousands of households have been relocated after residents complained of ailments they believe are linked to the natural gas leak at the utility’s Aliso Canyon facility.

Residents complained of headaches, nausea, nosebleeds and other symptoms. Public health officials blame the ailments on an odorant added to the gas and have said there shouldn't be long-term health problems.

The blowout at the largest natural gas-storage facility has released more than 2 million tons of methane into the air above the San Fernando Valley.

2. I doubt the whole truth is being told.

After going to meetings locally between what amounts to our City Hall and clashes between disgruntled residents involving oil companies and other energy type utilities, I have discovered those companies have a very loose version of the truth. Mostly, it's fantasy fiction with a few facts sprinkled in that suits their narrative. They really need to round up as many retirees, with time on their hands and who are good at doing research, to find out everything they can from every archive they can turn upside down and inside out to get at the facts.

The flow of methane gas has gradually slowed within the past few weeks so one might assume the pressure has also dropped.

Once a week since the beginning of November, when skies are clear with northern winds, Stephen Conley revs up a small, single-engine airplane and takes to the sky out of a hangar in Placer County.

The white and blue aircraft is equipped with a set of tubes along its underbelly and a backseat full of computing equipment but otherwise appears as an ordinary, albeit speedy, two-passenger plane.

It’s not until about two hours into his trek, over an area of Southern California, when Conley takes a turn toward the unusual: He switches to pollution-detection mode and begins sweeping the plane in and out of a giant, invisible plume of methane gas at gradually higher altitudes until the plane reaches the top.

His purpose is to monitor and measure the amount of methane coming from the Aliso Canyon natural gas leak, which started spewing methane-heavy natural gas in October, displacing thousands of residents from upscale, gated communities in the Porter Ranch neighborhood of northern Los Angeles. Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in the area for what is now being called the largest recorded leak of natural gas in California history.

5. Yay! Socal Gas is a decent company most of the time

Good on them for overestimating the time needed to fix the leak. Now fix the rest!

I'm just pleased with their careful work with residential customers. Don't know their ideological stance or who is da boss over there.

They grossly exceeded their cap and, in my opinion, are ethically obligated to buy a shitload of 'Credits'.

Truth be told, I haven't a clue how it works or if the program actually has any real legal bite.
