The cleanup at the refuge will likely include clearing out gag gifts sent to the occupiers from people mocking their cause around the country after they had put out calls for supplies, including snacks. Grasty said the FBI may have to sort through them.

Agents also have the time-consuming tasks of combing over equipment and computers at the refuge, Grasty said, inspecting for damage or tampering.

Leaders of the Burns Paiute Tribe recessed a meeting to attend the Thursday news conference. The refuge included lands sacred to the tribe, and the headquarters holds a collection of artifacts.

While the tribes are glad the occupiers are out, the situation is a long way from being closed, said Charlotte Rodrique, chairwoman for the Burns-based tribe.

“We are looking forward to getting our people down there to see what damage has been done,” she said, “and I am sure damage has been done.”
