SOCAL GAS BACKS OFF 48-HOUR RELOCATING PLAN IN PORTER RANCH

The months-long gas leak in Porter Ranch forced thousands of residents to relocate, but a controversial plan that would only give them 48 hours to return home once the leak was contained has been scrapped.

SoCal Gas agreed to provide housing for those displaced, but originally stated it would give residents 48 hours to move back into their homes once the leak was sealed.

"You can't move everybody out and then move everybody back," relocated resident Hedy Linder said. "You are dealing with children, schools and residents changing their entire lives."

The company has since backed off those plans.

Good luck trying to find a UHaul when 3499 other people have to move on the same day,
First they gave them 48 hours but not to be totally unusual punishment from doing nothing wrong they get 1 week to move back in a area that could still be poisoned.

1. Even 7 days is too little. A month, maybe - after each home is checked for environmental safety.

If they want people to move back quicker, offer an incentive to do so.

But - they're setting themselves up for a bigger lawsuit by trying to rush people back into potentially hazardous or even lethal homes before they've been verified safe than they would if they just did it the right way, take responsibility, and ensure these people are going back to a home that is in the same basic condition it was the day before the leak occurred.
Some person with asthma and a poor immune system dies soon after moving back in? That's potentially on them.
They might even be stuck with paying people for their property because the residents are not able to live in their homes without tearing down the old and putting up a new house in its place.

2. Seems totally unrealistic.

Is it even safe to return? They said this was only a temporary fix, not the permanent cap. Every house would need to be cleaned inside and out as well as the yards, decks, patios, pools, and kids play toys just from being left vacant. What about gas residues, particulates that may have drifted down to coat everything for miles around, is that petroleum based a health issue? Who would let their kids live in a house that was just taped off as a toxic hazard? Is there a test so the people know its safe to go back and don't have to worry that their kids are coming in contact with ?

3. It may be hard to fatham, but methane is a non-toxic gas

5. It's also lighter than air....

Open two doors and any residual gas simply goes out and up. Out and up, where it will contribute to the greenhouse gases already up in the sky.
