Assistant federal public defender Ruben Iniguez was appointed to represent Bundy for the day but said his office couldn't continue to represent him because it represents others in the case.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Janice M. Stewart directed Bundy to present a financial affidavit to the court before a court-appointed attorney could be assigned.

"The court only appoints counsel for those who can't afford an attorney,'' Stewart said.

Cliven Bundy currently faces charges of conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States of America and assault on a federal officer by use of a deadly and dangerous weapon, both stemming from the 2014 standoff at the Bundy Ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada. He was arrested by the FBI at the Portland airport in Oregon. He was on his way to protest the FBI’s presence at the refuge and to try to help get his sons out of jail.

So, after yelling for decades about the big, bad federal government, Cliven Bundy is seeking a court-appointed attorney, paid for by the big, bad federal government and us, the taxpayers. Now seems like a fantastic time for the Bureau of Land Management to finish what they were trying to do in 2014—confiscate his cattle and send them to auction to get back some of the money owed to the U.S. taxpayers.
