Disney & Marvel Studios: We will stop filming in Georgia if Governor signs anti-gay bill.

If you’ve been paying attention in recent times, you might have noticed that many projects have been heading to Georgia for production due to the state offering a very nice tax incentive. This list includes The Walking Dead as well as many of Marvel Studios projects, such as Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 which is currently filming in the state. Well, it looks like Disney & Marvel Studios might be looking for a new base of operations as the two are threatening to leave the state due to a controversial religious liberty bill that may be passed.

The bill that is at the core of this issue is intended to shield opponents of the Supreme Court’s landmark same-sex marriage ruling and would protect religious officials from having to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. The bill also would allow faith-based organizations to deny services of employment to those who violate their “sincerely held religious belief.” The bill is currently on the way to Governor Nathan Deal. Walt Disney Co. & Marvel Studios issued the following statement on the matter.

Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law.

Bravo to Disney & Marvel for this. This definitely isn’t something that Steve Rogers would stand for. Here’s hoping other studios join in. Sound off with your thoughts in the comments section below.

NC has blindly chased away much of the film work by cutting the tax incentives for film companies. Ford_Prefect Mar 2016 #12

And Marvel Studios have been an industry onto itself with the money they spent shooting in Atlanta. They just shot Captain America: Civil War there.

But money is all most of them understand. I'm talking both sides of the aisle here, too.

Fortunately, there are exceptions.

It's called leverage. Disney has many employees who are members of the GLBT community creating movies, etc that the public likes. And some of the public with spending $$$ are also members of the GLBT community. It would be nice if everyone would just do the right thing without it being a factor, but Marvel Studios pretty much set up shop in Atlanta and shoot their films mostly in Atlanta. If they pull out, the city and the state will really feel it.

How you make your money and how you spend it is what matters.

What remains is unlikely to sway votes in the legislature since the GOP do not want the film colony here nor the income stream.

It is one more aspect of the culture war the RW conservatives are waging on the rest of humanity.

IMHO they should all be arrested and sent to an island with instructions that they may not leave it. They may live as they like on the island but they may not approach mainland under ANY circumstances. That's when we'll find out how many of them really think global warming is a hoax
