As I watch the kerfuffle of the last 48 hours, I don't understand why The Donald would "walk back" his comments to Chris Matthews about punishing women who exercise a personal choice about their health and/or bodies.
Donald is the republican who actually SAYS what most republicans actually think. He really is the "truth teller" of the right. And what he said about punishment - it's in their heart day in and day out. I'm surprised The Donald didn't immediately turn to the camera a la Frank Underwood and say, in his best Chris Rock voice "Yeah - I said it".
If you draw a straight line from Roe v. Wade to today's clinic regulations, protests, provider murders (by protesters),etc - the only logical end point is a full out ban and prison terms ("10 years? What?" for the woman who has made a choice.
WTF is wrong with these people? That's where we heading with the republican party and the best way to change that course - wash republicans out of the Senate, the House, the Governor's mansions, the state houses...these guys are tailban in suits and ties. Shame on anyone who claims to be a democrat but can't get off their ass and vote it.
Sorry. Just had to vent somewhere. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

(748 posts)It's how you stop them in their tracks:
"So how should a woman be punished for having an illegal abortion?"

(1,301 posts)Many will say punish the provider. I've heard them.
I still stand by my statement that Trum is an anti-choicer for political expediency only, and has never even considered a nuanced answer, like so many of his "positions."

(23,158 posts)His belief in getting the best of any deal for himself and screwing everyone else. He's proud of 4 bankruptcies, he got richer. He never mentions the 1,000's of people who lost their jobs while he ducked out on his responsibilities because he never thinks of them. Nobody matters to him but himself and how someone would make him look better, richer, etc. That's why he's so scary. He has no moral compass and will do anything, anything, that makes him richer or more powerful and screw everyone else.

(70,306 posts)happening to women when severe restrictions get placed on them--more and more each month as more and more Legislatures play Doctor--practice medicine--in RED states. She said yes it is punishment--the right word. Perhaps there is a transcript someplace. Thanks for your post.
Any one who pretends otherwise is lying.

(25,270 posts)Repugs have been and are pushing to make abortion illegal. So if they get their way - how would that be enforced?
Donald just perhaps stated the obvious and took things to the logical/illogical conclusion.
However, this was one of those things that is the deep understory of the Repugs push. This was not supposed to be exposed - because it would get the People to start thinking about the real implications of overturning Roe v Wade. 'Really - punishing women for having an abortion. That's crazy.'
Now that this has been exposed - all the Repugs are walking it back. No - that's not what we mean. That's not what we intended.
Well Donald let the cat out of the bag and started the masses to really think about what this is all about.
This might be the difference necessary to prevent overturning Roe v Wade.
This is just my humble opinion of this.
Bottom line Trump has exposed the Repug Party for what they really are. Their stands on women, immigration, money in politics, buying/rigging elections, etc - overall their 'blatant hypocrisy'. When this is all over and they successfully Dump Trump and rig the election for the 1% - those Repug supporters that have been brainwashed into thinking they are the Grand Ole Party will really get to see them for what they really are about.
We might need to Thank Trump for that contribution. Maybe he will truly 'Make America Great Again' and we can take back our democracy for WE THE PEOPLE.

(33,982 posts)If you want t outlaw abortion, you want to punish women for having them. You can't have one without the other.
They don't like to say it out loud though.

And bible-thumping, sleazebag Cruz is one of the worst.
It's a theocracy they want, complete with stonings and hangings in the town square.

(23,970 posts)clearly he hadn't given any prior thought to his pro-life pandering, so he was able to arrive quickly at the simplest and most obvious consequences of such policies and state them plainly in words we can all understand. it's pretty much the most presidential thing i've seen him do, and he's getting torched for it.
torched from the right for stating a simple truth which was only to be hinted at with dog whistles.
torched from the left for the egregiousness of this standard Republican position for our future, aka "The Handmaid's Tail".
strangely enough, kudos to both DJT and Matthews for tossing this idea around and revealing the ugly truth that underlies it.

(20,588 posts)is another form of punishment they endorse. A woman must be punished for having sex without the intent of procreation.
The whole issue is about punishment.
Glad you brought this up.

(5,445 posts)If abortion is illegal and considered murder, then why shouldn't all the parties involved be punished. It's logical and such consequences would quickly result from a ruling that declared that legally human life begins at conception and is entitled to full protection under the law. Of course conservatives don't want people to know this.

(23,156 posts)got pregnant all by herself, no man involved, right Donald?
The other thing the anti-choice people simply don't understand is that even if abortion is outlawed, women will still find a way, unless you monitor every single woman of child-bearing age, noting carefully every month whether or not she has her period. I believe it was Romania that did that, and the numbers of abandoned, unwanted babies was truly heartbreaking.

They have probably forgotten the extremely violent deaths by firing squad of Nikolai and Elena Ceaușescu after the Romanian Revolution.
But some of the worst sins were the warehousing of children into those disgusting orphanages.
